Because of Romek: A Holocaust Survivor's Memoir, Second Edition, by David Faber, Anna Vaisman, James Kitchen

Because of Romek is a nonfiction, autobiographical narrative about the experiences of a teenager during the Holocaust of World War II. This is the riveting, true story of a young boy's survival in the face of Nazi atrocities.

In the mid-1960s, the German government contacted David Faber to testify against Nazi war criminals. Until then, he did not know that his older brother, Romek, whom the Nazis had tortured to death many years earlier, had been involved in a Polish Underground plot to avert Nazi Germany's ability to create an atomic bomb. When David finally agreed to testify, he began to relive all the horrors of his experiences during the war: concentration camps, murders, tortures, starvation, and disease. When David Faber was 13 years old, he had witnessed the Nazi murders of his parents, brother Romek, and five of his six sisters. He survived nine concentration camps between the ages of 13-18, from 1939 to 1945, including Auschwitz and Buchenwald. When he was liberated in 1945 from the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, he weighed a mere 72 pounds. Because of Romek fulfills David's promise to his dead mother that he would survive and tell the world about the horrors committed against him and his family.

This moving narrative is also a useful tool for educators. To today's students, the Holocaust too often seems to be an abstract event in the dim past. Because of Romek pulls the reader into the story, thereby illuminating the past and putting a face on history.

Stunning Account
By Wild Bill's Gal
This stunning memoir of David Faber is not to be missed by students of the Holocaust. Having just read "Death Dealer" by Nazi commandant Rudolph Hoess, I got a fuller picture of the institution of the death camp. Faber's recounting of dates, places, and persons matches Hoess's in startling detail. His determination to resist victimhood steels his resolve to survive, and his story is also laced with vignettes of those who offered kindness in the midst of the hellish nightmare. Faber is such a model for today's youth! I agree that this would make excellent supplemental reading for high school history students. I work in secondary ed. and recommend "Because of Romek".

A near impossible story of survival
By Joel D. Weber
I have read many books on WWII, and this one fills-in still more gaps and details missing for anyone who has not personally "been there" (like me).

This book reads indeed like a personal memoire, and seems with each passing page to add another layer of history and, of repeated events. One can almost begin to feel the numbing and dulling effects of observing up close, daily murder, suffering & disease. The days and months seem at once to pass overnight and also to evidence the immense weight born daily, by those who felt every minute, every breath of it. As readers we come close to feeling the routines repeated as a new Camp is entered, as "rows of five" are made and sensless beatings and murder played-out for all to see. It was for me, this very thing that made this account so personal, and allowed me for a short time, to see how I might begin to live and survive in such a daily environment. The details in this account are different and not so vivid as others, but actually recreate for the reader that heavy sense of despair and daily futility.

Read this and weep - think deeply upon the evil in humanity and the millions that were lost. Think long, and begin living deliberately.

OMG - You gotta read this book (brutal history)
By SimonSays
A must read. Heard a radio interview with either the author or maybe one his children not too long ago & was compelled to buy/read this book. The story is the most unbelievable/believable thing I've ever read. I just don't know how a person can experience so much. This book is so needed today by our youth.

Still going down hill
By Charlie LURP
Like all of the Krause/DBI books, Knives 2007 is still going down hill. The custom maker index is useful but the articles are very amateur. Noting like the pre-2000 days when Ken Warner was the editor.

All of the Knives annuals from 1981 onward are a must for the serious custom knife collector. The material collected allows one to determine the maker and any artist embellishments. Get em all if possible.

Vita Mathematica will enable teachers to learn the relevant history of various topics in the undergraduate curriculum and help them incorporate this history in their teaching. It contains articles dealing not only with calculus, but also with algebra, combinatorics, graph theory, and geometry, as well as more general articles on teaching courses for prospective teachers, and describes courses taught entirely using original sources. Judith Grabiner shows us how two important eighteenth century mathematicians, Colin Maclaurin and Joseph-Louis Lagrange, understood the calculus from these different standpoints and how their legacy is still important in teaching calculus today. We learn from Hans Nils Jahnke why Lagrange's algebraic approach dominated teaching in Germany in the nineteenth century. Wilbur Knorr traces the ancient history of one of the possible foundations, the concept of indivisibles. This volume demonstrates that the history of mathematics is no longer tangential to the mathematics curriculum, but in fact deserves a central role.

From Publishers Weekly
Forward has written several self-help classics about lousy, damaging relationships (Emotional Blackmail; Men Who Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them). Once again, she combines gentle empathy with no-nonsense advice as she examines men who lie to women and what women can do about it. Her goal, she writes, addressing women who have been lied to, is to "transform the wounds of betrayal and deception into the wisdom that will illuminate your path." From sexual infidelity to financial disaster, hidden addictions to secret ex-wives, Forward focuses on the serious lies that "involve an intent to deceive" and always "harm us and our relationships." She explains men's various motives, beliefs and behavior patterns, as well as women's frequent denial, "collusion" and acceptance of blame. Forward clearly describes the kind of liar she calls "the sociopath" and sternly warns women to steer clear of the beast and, if already involved with one, to "leave immediately." She then moves on to specific steps for confronting the (non-sociopathic) liar with the reality of his behavior and advises women how to set conditions for continuing the relationship and how to get support from friends, family and professional counselors. Buttressing her advice with examples from her practice, Forward offers some straight talk to women who may have forgotten what candor sounds like.

This book is AWESOME
By Book Lover
I would give this book 10 stars if I could. I love the author's no nonsense, no excuses style of writing.

I bought two copies of this book - one for myself and one for my sister. The reason I bought it is because my sister is in a marriage full of lies & infidelity and I wanted to understand why she stays in the marriage. It did help me to see that she sees everything through rose colored glasses and is in major denial because all her hopes and dreams have been shattered therefore she has to cling to something!

Before I read this book I thought that my sister's situation was unique, that she & her husband wouldn't fit into any category. Boy, was I wrong! I was completely amazed that all these liars fit into neat little categories. My brother-in-law is "the confessor" and uses "the insanity defense" as his excuses for lying and cheating. I could not believe that I was reading about their life in this book! Even the things that my sister tells us (her family) is in there (i.e. no one else understands, no one knows him like I do, etc., etc.) It's all in there!!

What I love most about this book is once you read it, you will never again be able to fall for his lies again! It opens your eyes and I think once you read it you will never look at the liar the same again. You will see all the lies for exactly what they are - LIES - instead of "I hope he is telling me the truth this time". The author shows you the pattern that all these liars follow therefore when you read this book you will recognize it for what it is!

I desperately hope that my sister will read the copy I sent to her. If not, maybe she will at least donate it to her local library to help women who actually want to be helped!

I highly recommend this book if you are in a relationship based on lies (even if you just suspect lies) and deception. You won't be sorry!

Mistresses are not victims & Liars are not keepers
By Elisabeth
In this book, the author does a good job describing the types of lies men tell, what tactics they use to avoid negative consequences when confronted, and how to spot the most dangerous liar of all -- the sociopath.
But I also had 2 major problems with this book, too:

PROBLEM # 1 - Treating mistresses like victims.

Mistresses are portrayed as victims because the married men they cheat with lied about leaving their wives for them. While true they did lie about leaving, they did NOT lie about being married. From the start, these women knew they were married and yet, entered his marriage without bothering to get his wife's consent.

They also knew that in order to be together, these men had to continuously lie to their wives. So if they're OK with that deal, that tells me they're OK with deception...just as long as only the wife is being deceived. Once they got deceived, too, suddenly they cried foul play, with the author joining the pity party.

Mistresses, however, are not victims. They're just opportunists who tried to prosper by cheating, but their plans to run off with another's husband backfired on them.

Does the author ever challenge these mistress's poor character? No. Instead, she focuses solely on the married man's poor character.
Her life lesson is that a mistress shouldn't hope a married man will leave his wife for her because a man who could cheat on his wife could cheat on her, too. True....but if she helped him cheat, for her own selfish gain, that means she considers cheating a justifiable means to an end. So wouldn't that make her just as risky for future cheating, too?

Another life lesson is that while the author knows of some men who leave their wives for their mistresses -- and good relationships result from his doing so -- the author says this rarely happens, so mistresses shouldn't get their hopes up too high.

There's 3 things wrong with this message:

(1) Mistresses are likely to ignore the rare part and focus on the exception part instead. If she's the exception, then the wife is in the way...and it's scary what some women do to women in the way.

(2) Two people seeking pleasure at someone else's expense obviously have some serious narcissistic issues...so this author believing two narcissists can have great relationships calls to question this author's expertise on what constitutes a healthy relationship.

(3) When a wife is cheated on, it is one of the most humiliating and degrading experiences she could ever go through...and then to be left for the accomplice? Even more degrading. So if a mistress is hoping a man will inflict this double-whammy of pain onto his wife, for her own self gain, that should call into question her character...but again, the author doesn't.

And because the author doesn't, mistresses will likely conclude the problem is entirely his. Case in point -- one woman asked her married lover, "How can you live like this?" It's an odd question given that if she found his lying so objectionable, then why didn't she object when he lied to his wife to be with her?
The real question she should ask is - how can SHE live with herself knowing she's helping a liar?

PROBLEM # 2 - The author's advice on dealing with a liar

Once women realize they're involved with a liar, the author advises women to have him recommit to a relationship based on integrity...so no more lying. She provides assertive responses in case he manipulates her further.

The problem with this logic is that men who place a high value on being honest and playing fair ALREADY have relationships based on integrity. They needn't recommit to values they already have. Of course, they're not perfect, but they're not chronic liars either.

That's why, although I believe in being assertive, I'm more concerned with WHO you're trying to reach. How realistic is it to expect a man who doesn't value integrity to transform into a man who does?

One man, when caught cheating, mischievously said, "I've been a bad boy." If you get a similar response, the author says you should tell him you understand the conversation is making him uncomfortable, but you won't get anywhere if he uses comedy. I, however, see his comedy as proof that he's not really sorry and too immature to be in an adult relationship, so it's better to leave him.

There is a section about leaving, however, before you're allowed to leave, you're supposed to second guess yourself by asking if you've given him enough time to change, are you being too impulsive, etc...? A chronic liar, however, doesn't deserve this kind of analysis.

Marriage is based on trust, so if one person deliberately breaks that trust for his own selfish gain, that person loses the right to stay in the marriage. Therefore, you're justified in leaving - right now - without granting him second or third chances.

I'm uncomfortable with any advice that second guesses leaving a mental abuser and thus, procrastinate in leaving one. That's why I prefer the book Romantic Deception by Dr. Sally Caldwell over this one.
In Caldwell's book, you won't find advice on converting a liar into a man with integrity. Instead, you'll find out how to identify a liar, why it's best to leave one, and how to leave one safely.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book!
By A Customer
After finding out my "now" ex-boyfriend, who was temporarily working in another state, had been cheating on me with someone for several months, I thought I must be crazy, stupid, or both to not have seen the signs sooner. I also went through the devastation, self-blame and feelings of panic that Susan describes in this book to a "T". She even got right the types of denials my ex-boyfriend had made to me when I confronted him. While no book can make the pain disappear, it sure is nice to know your feelings and thoughts are not crazy, but instead are shared by so many others. She really concentrates on helping you to stop beating yourself up over something you didn't cause or ask for in the first place. Here's a woman who's been there AND understands.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ..."incantations "--words of power, chanted in the belief that supernatural influence is, not asked, but compelled, by them, an influence for evil, or for warding off evil. There are also songs which are only heard at the initiation ceremonies, and which are therefore not known to the uninitiated, or to women. To English ears, unaccustomed to the simple and somewhat monotonous airs to which the words are set, there seems but little melody in the chants. But with custom they grow upon one, until at length one feels in some measure the effect which they produce upon an aboriginal audience in so powerful a manner. There is a wild and pathetic music in some of the songs which I have heard chanted by a number of voices together. Such was the song of Ngalalbal, as I heard it at the Murring Kuringal, and the song of the bat, in which at early dawn the whole of the men joined one by one in chorus, the words describing the bats " flitting about in the dim light which shows between the upper boughs of the trees." The makers of Australian songs, or of the combined songs and dances, are the poets, or bards, of the tribe, and are held in great esteem. Their names are known in the neighbouring tribes, and their songs are carried from tribe to tribe, until the very meaning of the words is lost, as well as the original source of the song. It is hard to say how far and how long such a song may travel in the course of time over the Australian continent. A good example of such far-travelled songs is the following, of which I have heard two versions. One runs as follows:--Malla-malle taria-rara uananga Ngumberanga ye-yandaba I heard it first sung by one of the Narrinyeri in 1861, and afterwards Mr. G. W. Rusden sang it for me from memory,...

This is Howitt's 1904 work. For students in the field, an ethnological classic, albeit requiring analytic caution. Howitt wasn't quite the armchair anthropologist, but the veracity and reliability of local accounts contained within this work are largely as good as Howitt's informants. In some places, the materials are substantial (eg Aldridge for Maryborough in Queensland). Hence the very next target for many readers are Howitt's notes; held in the Museum of Victoria, Monash U [from memory] and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Canberra. They're different holdings too - not the same collection reproduced.

The text itself, with its focus on ceremony, ritual, and belief, speaks to the ethnological predilections of the colonial intellectual culture of the time, and predates by a generation the emergence of the discipline of Australian anthropology within Australian Universities. Here the encyclopedic project has more of a (museum) collector's bent, and the subject matter and materials collected and reported upon (particular customary and ceremonial observances, the `class' (section) system, dubious exegetical speculations on myth and ritual) reflect a 'salvaging' of that gone, thought lost, (in reality just about gone from their own cultural memories). The linguistic and other materials are all second-hand and drawn from the idiosyncratic orthographies of amateur correspondents, men of letters - `settlers' - in the early days of colonial occupation.

Ironically in the Federal, then High Court of Australia, the Yorta Yorta people were judged to have not maintained their law and custom in part because they no longer practiced the customs described within this work. There's a lesson there, about the reification of knowledge. The descendants of the unnamed Aboriginal people who are the true sources of the information contained within this account, are themselves still struggling for the right to be heard.

All paths lead to war...

Marcus' hero days are behind him. He knows too well that even the smallest war still means somebody's death. When his men are impressed into a doomed army, staying out of a battle he wants no part of requires some unorthodox steps.

Cithrin is an orphan, ward of a banking house. Her job is to smuggle a nation's wealth across a war zone, hiding the gold from both sides. She knows the secret life of commerce like a second language, but the strategies of trade will not defend her from swords.

Geder, sole scion of a noble house, has more interest in philosophy than in swordplay. A poor excuse for a soldier, he is a pawn in these games. No one can predict what he will become.

Falling pebbles can start a landslide. A spat between the Free Cities and the Severed Throne is spiraling out of control. A new player rises from the depths of history, fanning the flames that will sweep the entire region onto The Dragon's Path -- the path to war.

Review
Everything I look for in a fantasy George R. R. Martin THE DRAGON'S PATH is a first superb installment in a series that has established itself already in my top level of current ongoing fantasy series Fantasy Book Critic THE DRAGON'S PATH is a tremendous novel and Abraham deftly mixes the classic foundations of the genre with a sophistication expected of him and rarely found in the work of his compatriots A Dribble of Ink THE DRAGON'S PATH is a winner. The characters are engaging and well-motivated, the plot intriguing The Wertzone Abraham weaves several characters into the story, each with their own flaws and ghosts that haunt them. Character development is quite deft and the author provides believable, fallible, and interesting players on his stage ... THE DRAGON'S PATH is an enjoyable read that holds great expectations for the series SF Signal

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Abraham (the Seasons of War quartet) starts this rich, exciting, and fresh epic fantasy series opener in a fairly standard fashion: an orphaned girl and a once great general escape from a city under siege with the help of a traveling theater troupe. But that's where the clichs end, for Marcus Wester would far rather guard humble caravans than cruel kings, and Cithrin bel Sarcour's loyalty is not to her long-dead noble parents but to the Medean Bank that took her in. Cithrin and Marcus must smuggle the treasury of the lost city of Vanai through a war zone in which every army seeks new sources of funds and every king wants them dead. With a deft and light hand, Abraham questions and explores the fantasy-world assumptions that most authors take for granted, telling an enjoyable and genuinely innovative adventure story along the way. Brilliant beginning for this new series
By R. Nicholson
"The Dragon's Path" is the first book in 'The Dagger and the Coin' series by Daniel Abraham. The book is 592 pages in length while the Kindle e-edition is a 1861 Kb download.

GENERAL THEME (no spoilers)
The land is rife with changes: national aspirations and personal agendas all combine to lend an air of impending conflict that have been smoldering along for some time. And all it would take to set things off would be a few unexpected incidents to occur at the wrong time and the wrong place...and guess what.

Things I liked...

1.) An interesting story filled with lots of action and intrigue. The tale is told from several different viewpoints. Many of the people have some connection with each other, while some are more remotely associated by way of story (to be linked at a later stage).

2.) Character development...the multi-viewpoint technique Abraham used with his protagonists allowed for a slow seepage of information that, by the end of the novel, gave the reader a fairly good glimpse of the personalities and traits of the individual narrators.

3.) A really good MAP. With easy visualization of the different principalities AND a legend with numbers and corresponding names where major cities and towns were located within the map. The Kindle edition map was expandable and was easily readable, even in its most enlarged form...nice.

4.) Areas of decisive (and often unexpected) actions that have horrendous consequences, but described without the graphic gore and violence so prevalent in many of today's fantasy/adventures. A refreshing change from the norm.

5.) One of those books that got better and more involved as it proceeded towards the finish.

Concerns:
Other than starting a little slowly, none.

Conclusion:
Overall the writing was excellent and the pacing (by and large) was superb; a tale that gained momentum as it went along and by the end had me hooked. I'm really looking forward to the second book in the series ('The King's Blood'). 5 Stars.

Ray Nicholson

P.S.
In addition to "The Dragon's Path", the Kindle e-edition includes as a bonus, another complete novel...an advance reading copy of "Leviathan Wakes" by James S.A. Corey.

The potential is there, but the execution was a little flat
By Patrick St-Denis, editor of Pat's Fantasy Hotlist
Mea culpa: Although I own every volume part of Daniel Abraham's The Long Price Quartet, I have yet to read the first installment. Hence, this would be my first foray into the author's long form works. I absolutely loved Leviathan Wept and Other Stories last summer, and I was thus looking forward to reading the opening chapter in The Dagger and the Coin sequence.

Though certain facets of The Dragon's Path show a lot of promise and potential, I had mixed feelings about the novel as a whole when I reached the last page.

The worldbuilding is at times brilliant, but this aspect also leaves much to be desired in other instances. The entire back story regarding dragons and their fallen empire was utterly fascinating, and I wish we could have learned more about it. The many vestiges of the dragons' civilization definitely added depth to this tale, hinting at countless secrets from the past left to be discovered. Another concept which could have been interesting but turned out to be a failure to launch was the various races. For reasons that remain unexplained, humanity is now split into thriteen different races, all of them born from the Firstblood mold. Problem is, other than disparate physical traits, it appears that humanity, as a whole or sundered in its myriad forms, has no history, mythology, and religion; nothing to give each of the races its identity as a society. So much had been made concerning the thirteen races prior to the book's release that I was persuaded that this would set The Dragon's Path apart from the competition. I was expecting a panoply of diverse cultures, all with their own traditions and beliefs. Sadly, the total absence of depth in that regard -- thus far -- was a definite letdown.

The politicking isn't polished enough, I felt, and in the end everything seemed a bit too contrived for my taste. In terms of court intrigue, not every author can be as talented as George R. R. Martin or Katherine Kurtz. And yet, if a good chunk of your premise depends on this, then the politicking needs to be up to snuff.

The characterization did nothing for me, unfortunately. Which is odd, given the fact that it's not because the story isn't populated by well-defined protagonists. Most characters are nicely realized men and women, each with his or her own back story. But for some reason -- and God knows I've tried to put my finger on it in the last two weeks -- the characters all left me indifferent. Which doesn't really bode well for me. One must give Daniel Abraham credit for playing with our own preconceptions of fantasy stereotypes. The author managed to mix things up by using popular genre tropes, only to turn the table on the readers later on. Still, Marcus was never able to rise above the clichd warrior who has seen enough of violence. The same can be said of Dawson, the typical nobleman. Though she did nothing for me as a character, Cithrin's storylines is likely the most interesting of the bunch. Abraham tackling commerce and everything it encompasses as an arc shows a lot of promise. The most intriguing character remains the Apostate, and I'm curious to see how his plotline will influence the rest of the series.

The pace is a bit uneven here and there, yet the novel's narrative flows well for the most part. The prose doesn't grab hold of you the way I anticipated, but it does create a vivid imagery.

The structure of the book follows that of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Instead of regular chapter, the book is divided in POV sections. The Dragon's Path features the points of view of Marcus, Geder, Cithrin, Dawson and his wife Clara, as well as that of the Apostate.

All in all, though it might not be the sort of opening chapter I was expecting, The Dragon's Path shows a lot of potential. Whether or not Daniel Abraham can up his game in the second installment remains to be seen. Yet, as many have pointed out, The Long Price Quartet got better and better with each new volume, so here's to hoping that it will be the case here as well.

Though The Dragon's Path is a solid effort, in several aspects the execution fell a little flat.

early candidate for one of year's best fantasies
By B. Capossere
As I've said in my other reviews of his books, I'd place Daniel Abraham's The Long Price Quartet, among the top four or five fantasy series of the past decade. So when his new series, entitled The Dagger and the Coin, was announced, I was more than eager to see what he would do for a follow-up. I was not disappointed. The first book in the series, The Dragon's Path, is one of my favorite reads so far this year and I'll be surprised if it doesn't make it onto my year's best list by the end.

It is set in a world long ago ruled by dragons, who over time created thirteen subspecies of humans to act as specialized slaves, breeding one group with the attributes of warriors and another with traits better suited to underground mining, for instance. With the dragons long gone (though their artifacts such as roads and buildings remain), the humans have forged their own kingdoms, city-states, empires, etc. One such is Antea, whose Severed Throne sits in the capital city of Camnipol. Antea is currently ruled by King Simeon, but the land teeters on the edge of civil war as new ideas threaten the whole idea of fixed nobility and rule by king, leading to factions and rivalries within the court. Dawson Kalliam is an ultraconservative noble who will do all he can to protect his friend the king and the status quo (everybody in their place where they belong), sure in the rightness and, ahem, "nobility" of his position. Along with the group of nobles he enlists to his cause, he is also is helped by his wife Clara, son Jorey, and a houseguard named Coe. Caught up in the gamesmanship is a young noble, Geder Palliako, who is more scholar than soldier or political player, but finds himself at various points fighting in an attack on the Free City of Vanai, becoming head administrator of a city, trying to head off a coup, and setting out into the wilds in search of an ancient legend.

Meanwhile, the Medean Bank branch in Vanai, seeing the writing on the wall, smuggles out much of its holdings via a young ward of the bank, Cithrin, who disguises herself as a boy, the goods as wool and iron, and joins a caravan exiting the city before the battle. The caravan is guarded by Captain Marcus Wester (famous hero), his second in command Yardem, and a group of actors he's had to hire to pretend to be guards, led by an older actor named Kit. Eventually, plans go awry and the caravan is diverted to another city where the characters have to find new ways to keep themselves and the bank's wealth safe. The book weaves among several third-person points of views, most often focusing on Wester, Cithrin, Geder, and Dawson, with a few others (such as Clara and a character who appears in the prologue).

The Dragon's Path shares many of the same qualities that made the Long Price Quartet so good while working in a very different, and somewhat more conventional, sort of fantasy story. The first is excellent characterization. The two displaying the biggest growth are Geder and Cithrin, both of whom need to find new strengths within themselves as they are thrust into unfamiliar and dangerous new roles. Both begin in relatively weak positions: Geder is made a pawn of the political machinations around him while Cithrin has been a protected ward of the bank and has yet to come into her legal age. Rather than simply take us on the usual coming-of-age journey, however, Abraham throws a few twists at us, taking both characters into places we don't expect them to go, and not such glorious places either. Even better is how their maturations take place in two wholly different worlds: Geder in the political and militaristic and Cithrin in the world of economics (yes, economics).

Wester grows in quieter, more subtle ways, struggling with the changing dynamics of his relationship with Cithrin and a heavy grief he's carried with him for years. Kit, meanwhile, doesn't really change so much as is gradually revealed. The same is true for Dawson's wife Clara. Dawson, on the other hand, as one might expect from an ultraconservative, doesn't change at all, even when change might in fact be wiser than the path chosen. One of the more fascinating aspects of the book in fact is how the point of view puts the reader at odds with him or herself. As readers, one has a tendency to identify with pov character. Yet Dawson is just about the antithesis of all modern political thought: a man who will die to keep the poor in their place and the rich in theirs, not simply because he benefits personally from it but because it's "right." He rails against the new restrictions on slavery and worries the "rabble" may "choose to champion themselves." He is almost the epitome of the sneering, condescending lord we all love to hate when our pov character works against him. But here he is front and center as the pov character--what's a reader to do? Without spoiling things, I'll say that Dawson is not the only character Abraham plays this game with and its one of the most intriguing and compelling aspects of the novel.

The side characters vary in their depth and range, but none do a disservice to the reading experience. The prose makes for truly effortless reading--clean, tight, efficient without being monotone, with sharp dialogue. I'd say it is less stylized or elegant than the Long Price Quartet, though it has its moments, as when he describes how a city has outgrown its ancient battlements: "The architecture of war slept in the middle of a living community like a great hunting cat torpid from the kill."

The plot is, hmmm, perhaps Abrahamesque is the word? It's certainly more conventional than the Long Price Quartet, but it shares with that series a slow pace, quiet action, character-driven scenes, a focus on personal introspection and relationship, and a preference for political and economic maneuvering rather than sweeping military action. Abraham dispenses of "classic" fantasy scenes such as battles or journey-quests either super-speedily or in unexpected fashion. And magic--an obvious fantasy trope--is as even more understated here than in his first series, which is saying something. There is magic, but like most of Abraham's style, it is a quieter version than we're used to and comes in small, sharp moments (though we have hints it will perhaps be reentering the world in larger fashion).

I should emphasize here that "understated" and "quiet" are not euphemisms for "dull." I read The Dragon's Path in a single sitting, reading well into the night. Truth is, I find Abraham's depiction of conspiracies and economic repercussions, as well as his parsimonious use of magic to be more compelling than many a fantasy novel filled with "epic" battles and "wizardly fire."

Finally, I'll add that while I wouldn't say The Dragon's Path has flaws, in that nothing really detracted from the reading experience, it does have aspects that aren't as strong as its good qualities. I can't say I had a great feel for the thirteen human races; they seemed to blend in or blur. Part of me assumes we'll delve more into them as the series continues, so this isn't such a big deal. And part of me wonders if it matters much; that the fact they're simply "there" just makes for a more realistic feel to the story, rather than giving the reader a "tour" of the Kooky Krazy Fantasy Races. In either case, as I said, it never bothered me or took me out of the story. The same sort of no great feel for things but didn't distract holds true for a sense of culture: food, religion, etc. He has one scene where a character recalls a city he'd overwintered in: "There's a lake in the middle of the city, and the whole time we were there, you could cross it anywhere. There's a winter city they build on the ice every year. Houses and taverns and all. Like a real town." I would have loved to have gotten more of those kinds of details, as well as more on the races, but as there's a lot of story left to come, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this an assume we will see more in both areas (that scene, by the way, with the speaker teaching Cithrin how to ice skate, is one of those small but beautiful moments between characters that Abraham does so well.)

In the end, The Dragon's Path impresses nearly as much as the Long Price Quartet and I can't wait to see where this goes (and one does need to wait--unlike that first series this book doesn't end with a clear resolution. It isn't a cliffhanger, but the story is in the middle). This one will be hard to push off that Year's Favorite list. Highly recommended.

19th century novel now rarely read
By docjack
This is an English 19th century novel that modern readers seem to unaware of. This is considered George Meredith best novel. I found it engrossing. Such charters in the 21st century are foreign to our experience. Worth reading.
