More like 68 days -- but who's counting. An excellent introduction to anti-aging practices

First, let me spill the beans: while the title advertises a 17-day plan, it's actually a series of four 17 day plans -- each one designed to address certain issues associated with aging. After introducing some aging-related science, the author discusses our cultural expectations about aging, and then confronts them directly. Then we get the four anti-aging plans:
Cycle 1, Stop Your Aging Clock, covers the basics of aging, and sets up the basics for limiting its degenerative effects.
Cycle 2, Restore, focuses on heart, breath, and brain. Cycle 3, Refine, covers the issues of sexuality and masculinity.
Cycle 4, Renew, discusses detoxification and the relationship between healthy living and longevity.
Each cycle has a 17-day plan attached to it, designed to put the section's principles into action.
The material works out well. And it's certainly an excellent introduction to aging, as well as a practical guide to minimizing the harm aging can do. It's rather basic, and those really interested in digging in to the subject of longevity and anti-aging would do well to check out more in-depth books. But this is a great place to start.

Dr. Moreno does it again! After his trend setting blockbuster, the 17 Day Diet Book, he explains in both engaging and understandable terms the keys to avoid the effects of aging. I've read many books on this subject and this is by far the best written and most interesting book on aging. The 4-cycle plan, each cycle focusing on a different body system, is a must follow guide to keeping you healthy. His descriptions range from rebuilding and maintaining your joints, heart, gut, and brain. For many of us that have seen the effects of aging, this is a true treasure of information on how to feel and stay young. A must read for both your parents and your kids!

Slowing Aging

Over all I enjoyed reading this book since instead of giving advice it is written in an entertaining and informative way. I also appreciate the fact at the end of the book Dr. M. admits there is no way to stop aging but by having a healthy life style one can slow aging. Just like everything else in life just reading one book, this one or another, or making healthy choices for seventeen days is not going to change one's life. Like the author says staying healthy as one ages is a lot of work and commitment.
In spite of the fact it is well-written, there was nothing in the book I hadn't already known since I have been reading books like this for decades. However I was pleasantly surprised to see the author seems to know much more than most conventional doctors do about preventive medicine and nutrition.
Some of the things in the book I didn't care for:
The healthy weight chart doesn't seem realistic or healthy to me. For example: a 5' 2" woman is supposed to be 99-121 lbs. ( Please let's get real) and also please do your own research before taking any osteoporosis and cholesterol lowering drugs because you may not like what you find out.
And my major problem with this book is the chapter about hormones which is very brief and on the surface. When doctors or media mention hormones what they are referring is synthetic drugs with devastating effects such as dementia, stroke, heart disease, cancer and etc. On the other hand, bioidentical hormones are identical to the human hormones and prevent chronic disease. The book talks about the benefits of hormone replacement without mentioning it is bioidentical hormones beneficial not the synthetic drugs which are called "hormones" by doctors and drug companies.
To anybody suffering from any chronic disease (Since men and women have the same hormones in their bodies in different amounts), I recommend reading the first part of Women's Hormones by Pamela Smith, MD and watching Dr. Frank Shallenberger's free educational videos on his website called "Managing Your Thyroid and Adrenal Glands. The Secret of Healing Chronic Disease" and "Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement". Dr.Frank Shallenberger's new book about slowing aging and preventing chronic disease, "Bursting With Energy", is also pretty good.
My recommended list of readings:
"Testosterone Syndrome" by Dr Euguene Shippen for women and men over fifty.
"What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause" by Dr John Lee for women over thirty and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" for women over fifty years old.
"Your Thyroid and How to Keep it Healthy" by Dr. Barry Durrant-Peatfield. This is the best book written about thyroid disorders, their relation to other illnesses such as diabetes, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, bio-identical hormone replacement and much more.
