An Audio Review
By Stacey is Sassy (Stacey B-Reviews)
The Dark Light of Day was grizzly, violent and dark...and I really enjoyed it. T.M. Frazier has an amazing ability to take me out of my comfort zone and show me a side to life that I never want for myself. She makes me happy to sit in my comfortable home, with my amazing husband and beautiful children knowing that the darkness she writes about, isn't part of my world. I'll take a peek-a-boo into that dark world, I just don't want to live it.

I found it really interesting to read about Jake. I met him in the King series and I was a wee bit intimidated by him. There is no way you would or could expect that the violent, unemotional man could be the same man who is in love and devoted to Abby, the main character of this story. His patience and understanding of Abby's emotional and physical scars were so sweet to read. Ok, sweet is probably not the right word when it comes to these two. See Abby is the perfect match for Jake. She sees things in a very similar way to Jake and knows that retribution and revenge sometimes need to be handled in a better way than calling the cops. It was scary how well suited they were to each other.

Now, this book is not for the feint of heart. Nearly every trigger warning you can think of needs to be attached to The Dark Light of Day. I find that I handle it a lot better knowing that before going in. My eyes are wide open to what I'll face and I can compartmentalise better the "triggers" that I'm confronted with.

In regards to the audio version...I had no problems with it at all. I was a little disappointed that the male narrator didn't have a bigger part, to be honest. His voice sent shivers up my spine...in a good way. The female narrator was really good though so I shouldn't really complain. It was easy to follow along, understand and I had no problems telling when a character changed.

I really enjoyed listening to The Dark Light of Day and would have no hesitations in listening to another story with these narrators.

I loved this book
By Ashleigh Wilson
The Dark Light of Day by TM Frazier is a prequel to the popular dark romance, King seires. It tells the story of Jake, a troubled young man running from his past and living freely, and Abby, an orphaned teenager who finds herself homeless and has a dark past that continues to haunt her. When the two meet, there’s an instant connection that triggers something within them individually that progresses throughout the course of the book. Jake provides Abby with a place to live and works to help her live the life she deserves and break free from the demons of her past. Meanwhile, Abby’s presence winds up helping Jake heal from his own demons. Together, they grow leaps and bounds until a tragic misunderstanding sends Jake away for years. When Jake returns to town in the midst of yet another grueling time for Abby, they are able to work on their communication and clear up those misunderstandings while uncovering a shocking truth that changes the direction of their lives. I loved this book. Yes, some of it was predictable and there was the whole insta-love that some people hate, but it didn’t take away from the story as a whole. It was in the details that made it worthwhile. It was very dark and very tragic, but Abby was such a warrior. She grew from being a shy victim to taking the reins of her life and fighting back with all she’s got. She ended up being a very strong lead female. Jake was likable for the most part, but there were some times that I just wanted to knock some sense into him. He redeemed himself, though. I give The Dark Light of Day 4 painfully dark stars.

Our Review from MustReadBooksOrDie
By Courtney~MustReadBooksOrDie
I reviewed this at MustReadBooksOrDie with my friend Shelley!

Shel: I LOVED THIS NOVEL. LOVED IT. The writing was fantastic. The words, Courtney, the words. I could gush lots. The story was compelling and I had lots of OH MY (edit)! moments. I'm betting that Courtney cried maybe once?!!!

Court: You know what? I didn't! It's a miracle right! But *mumbles* I came really close. Even though I didn't ugly cry...it was still an incredibly emotional story. I mean, look, Shelley is even using shouty caps! WHAT! That's right. The writing was immediately enthralling and this is a DEBUT NOVEL! WHAT! Yeah. I thought that too. It is a ridiculously well written story that sneaks up on you without you even knowing what hit you. And now I'm shouty caps'ing you...so basically you need to read this book!

Shel: I love Jake and Abby. They're both so dark and unapologetic for their darkness. Jake is grappling with some bad stuff but if it were a contest, he'd lose. Abby had some major (edit) up (edit) happen to her in this novel. I gasped at some scenes..and really, I don't do that. I'm not going to say I was shocked but I was hurt, pained, distraught, freakin' angry beyond belief..livid, really at some of the horrors she lived through. So, yeah, I love these two when they are together. They are raw and hard and vulnerable all at the same time. Good stuff.

Court: Girl couldn't catch a break. At all. It was insane the things that happened to her. But I never felt pity. I never felt sorry for her. She made her reality for herself. And you just knew if she was thinking something was too good to be true...it probably was. Abby's journey is raw, emotional and shocking. It is difficult to read, but so amazingly well written that I could not look away. I read it so fast, it was ridic.

Shel: I can see why this wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but I've been leaning towards darker things lately and this had a nice balance of dark, light, and pretty, honest, and raw prose. I enjoyed every single word of this novel. Every word. I have HUGE, MAD LOVE for this writer and I'm not ashamed to say that I'll snap up everything she writes. I loved it that much. What a storyteller. I think I have a new crush...

Court: I am with you on this new girl crush. THIS is another perfect example of why we love to read. THIS, sure is very dark and twisty and OH MY GAH did that really just happen....but it is so real. It is much more real to life than some of the dark things we've read. Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, but reading about the people who look for the sunshine anyways...makes me cry while writing a review thinking about them. How's that for a revelation?

Shelley: 5 stars
Courtney: 5 Stars

Great Ninjutsu book
By Michael D. Bruce
This is a must have for the ninja library.

Why?

Many ninja books spend the first few chapters telling you about the history of the ninja and the Ryu and the things that a ninja was classically trained in. While that is good information - this book doesn't waste your time repeating what everyone else tells you about.

This book was useful to me in three ways.
1. It had an emphasis on the spiritual and personal development of ninjutsu. This is a subject sorely lacking in all martial arts books - especially in Ninjutsu because its not a straight cross over to Zen Buddhism... Plus its put in plain english, in modern application and terms, so you're not left guessing how to interpret the instruction.

2. This book debunks the stretching mythos and gives some good advice on how to improve flexibility and the why's and hows of why one method works over the other. It was good to see a book that was not afraid to go away from what everyone else says and stand out.

3. This is a book - so when a physical technique is described its hard to get the sense of how to do it. This book goes to great length to describe a technique in detail and then show you the pictures. It also tells you what to look out for when you are performing the said technique.

This book is written from a Bujinkan perspective but is useful for any Ninjutsu practitioner. This is a book that I would recommend to add to your collection! A must read.

The Dodo and the Solitaire: A Natural History (Life of the Past), by Jolyon C. Parish

The Dodo and the Solitaire is the most comprehensive book to date about these two famously extinct birds. It contains all the known contemporary accounts and illustrations of the dodo and solitaire, covering their history after extinction and discussing their ecology, classification, phylogenetic placement, and evolution. Both birds were large and flightless and lived on inhabited islands some 500 miles east of Madagascar. The first recorded descriptions of the dodo were provided by Dutch sailors who first encountered them in 1598―within 100 years, the dodo was extinct. So quickly did the bird disappear that there is insufficient evidence to form an entirely accurate picture of its appearance and ecology, and the absence has led to much speculation. The story of the dodo, like that of the solitaire, has been pieced together from fragments, both literary and physical, that have been carefully compiled and examined in this extraordinary volume.

Review

"This book is the best source yet on these most familiar of extinct creatures.... Highly recommended." ―Choice

"As an up-to-date and comprehensive review of everything we know about the dodo and solitaire... this book will be enjoyed, and sought after, by an enormous readership. It deserves high praise indeed." ―Journal of Verterbrate Paleontology

"It’s depressing to contemplate that two extinct species could be summed up in a single book―but if it must be so, it should definitely be a book as magnificent as this one. The Dodo and the Solitaire is a large, handsome book that offers as complete a record as is now possible of these two birds..." ―10,000 Birds

"Parish is intentionally cautious not to draw firm conclusions on the many debates regarding the biology, physiology and history of the Dodo. He prefers to restrict himself to countering arguments and debunking myths, often without offering a succinct alternative. While a source of frustration to a reader accustomed to digesting information in an 'introduction-supporting data-conclusion' format, this will ultimately prove one of the books greatest strengths. By refusing to wade into the debates, Parish has crafted a book that will firmly resist obsolescence.

" ―thisviewoflife.com

"Parish’s magnificent, comprehensive tome compares very favourably indeed with its illustrious predecessors […] For me, the unique way Parish’s book compares, contrasts, and focuses upon the historical accounts (translated into English when the originals were in other languages) gives a vitality to the dodo’s life story. It is as if the reader is witnessing at first hand this hapless, helpless bird’s fascinating but tragically brief existence […] The publisher has spared no expense on layout, illustrations or paper quality. This book is a thing of beauty in its own right that no ebook could compete with […] This is a wonderful, definitive treatment of the dodo and solitaire." ―Fortean Times

"The story of the dodo, like that of the solitaire, has been pieced together from fragments, both literary and physical, that have been carefully compiled and examined in this extraordinary volume." ―Birdbooker Report

"…[A] magnificent, liberally illustrated book in quarto...not likely to be surpassed―of two tragic victims of history." ―Svenska Dagbladet

"Written in comprehensive detail, it is dense with an amazing amount of history, references, facts, maps, and illustrations." ―Library Journal

"A labor of love. There is great value in having all of this information in one, succinct package. This book is the definitive work on the subject." ―Jeffrey D. Stilwell, Monash University

"Parish’s historical account on these enigmatic birds ranks... amongst the most complete works on the Mascarene birds and will remain so for a very long time. If you have any interest in natural history
... you should definitely consider reading Parish’s concise volume on one of the most extraordinary birds with one of the most extraordinary stories." ―Priscum

Amazing book
By Hammurabi Babylonia
I really love this book - every piece of diverse information consolidated into one book. Probably not a good first book for those into dodos (Errol Fuller is a great starting point) but for someone who wants to examine comparisons between conflicting reports, second-hand illustrations and the kind of Chinese-whispers scenario through which much of our current information has come to pass, this book is ideal. My favourite book of the year.

Plenty of material here for the book I wish the compiler had sat down and written. Eminently consultable, but hardly readable.

Blindness (Harvest Book), by Jose Saramago

A city is hit by an epidemic of "white blindness" which spares no one. Authorities confine the blind to an empty mental hospital, but there the criminal element holds everyone captive, stealing food rations and raping women. There is one eyewitness to this nightmare who guides seven strangers-among them a boy with no mother, a girl with dark glasses, a dog of tears-through the barren streets, and the procession becomes as uncanny as the surroundings are harrowing. A magnificent parable of loss and disorientation and a vivid evocation of the horrors of the twentieth century, Blindness has swept the reading public with its powerful portrayal of man's worst appetites and weaknesses-and man's ultimately exhilarating spirit. The stunningly powerful novel of man's will to survive against all odds, by the winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Amazon.com Review
In an unnamed city in an unnamed country, a man sitting in his car waiting for a traffic light to change is suddenly struck blind. But instead of being plunged into darkness, this man sees everything white, as if he "were caught in a mist or had fallen into a milky sea." A Good Samaritan offers to drive him home (and later steals his car); his wife takes him by taxi to a nearby eye clinic where they are ushered past other patients into the doctor's office. Within a day the man's wife, the taxi driver, the doctor and his patients, and the car thief have all succumbed to blindness. As the epidemic spreads, the government panics and begins quarantining victims in an abandoned mental asylum--guarded by soldiers with orders to shoot anyone who tries to escape. So begins Portuguese author José Saramago's gripping story of humanity under siege, written with a dearth of paragraphs, limited punctuation, and embedded dialogue minus either quotation marks or attribution. At first this may seem challenging, but the style actually contributes to the narrative's building tension, and to the reader's involvement.

In this community of blind people there is still one set of functioning eyes: the doctor's wife has affected blindness in order to accompany her husband to the asylum. As the number of victims grows and the asylum becomes overcrowded, systems begin to break down: toilets back up, food deliveries become sporadic; there is no medical treatment for the sick and no proper way to bury the dead. Inevitably, social conventions begin to crumble as well, with one group of blind inmates taking control of the dwindling food supply and using it to exploit the others. Through it all, the doctor's wife does her best to protect her little band of blind charges, eventually leading them out of the hospital and back into the horribly changed landscape of the city.

Blindness is in many ways a horrific novel, detailing as it does the total breakdown in society that follows upon this most unnatural disaster. Saramago takes his characters to the very edge of humanity and then pushes them over the precipice. His people learn to live in inexpressible filth, they commit acts of both unspeakable violence and amazing generosity that would have been unimaginable to them before the tragedy. The very structure of society itself alters to suit the circumstances as once-civilized, urban dwellers become ragged nomads traveling by touch from building to building in search of food. The devil is in the details, and Saramago has imagined for us in all its devastation a hell where those who went blind in the streets can never find their homes again, where people are reduced to eating chickens raw and packs of dogs roam the excrement-covered sidewalks scavenging from corpses.

And yet in the midst of all this horror Saramago has written passages of unsurpassed beauty. Upon being told she is beautiful by three of her charges, women who have never seen her, "the doctor's wife is reduced to tears because of a personal pronoun, an adverb, a verb, an adjective, mere grammatical categories, mere labels, just like the two women, the others, indefinite pronouns, they too are crying, they embrace the woman of the whole sentence, three graces beneath the falling rain." In this one woman Saramago has created an enduring, fully developed character who serves both as the eyes and ears of the reader and as the conscience of the race. And in Blindness he has written a profound, ultimately transcendent meditation on what it means to be human. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly
Brilliant Portuguese fabulist Saramago (The History of the Siege of Lisbon) has never shied away from big game. His previous works have rewritten the history of Portugal, reimagined the life of Christ and remodeled a continent by cleaving the Iberian peninsula from Europe and setting it adrift. Here, Saramago stalks two of our oldest themes in the tale of a plague of blindness that strikes an unnamed European city. At the novel's opening, a driver sits in traffic, waiting for the light to change. By the time it does, his field of vision is white, a "milky sea." One by one, each person the man encounters?the not-so-good Samaritan who drives him home, the man's wife, the ophthalmologist, the patients waiting to see the ophthalmologist?is struck blind. Like any inexplicable contagion, this plague of "white sickness" sets off panic. The government interns the blind, as well as those exposed to them, in an abandoned mental hospital guarded by an army with orders to shoot any detainee who tries to escape. Like Camus, to whom he cannot help being compared, Saramago uses the social disintegration of people in extremis as a crucible in which to study the combustion of our vices and virtues. As order at the mental hospital breaks down and the contagion spreads, the depraved overpower the decent. When the hospital is consumed in flames, the fleeing internees find that everyone has gone blind. Sightless people rove in packs, scavenging for food, sleeping wherever they can. Throughout the narrative, one character remains sighted, the ophthalmologist's wife. Claiming to be blind so she may be interned with her husband, she eventually becomes the guide and protector for an improvised family. Indeed, she is the reader's guide and stand-in, the repository of human decency, the hero, if such an elaborate fable can have a hero. Even after so many factual accounts of mass cruelty, this most sophisticated fiction retains its peculiar power to move and persuade. Editor, Drenka Willen. (Sept.) FYI: Paperback editions of The History of the Siege of Lisbon and Baltasar and Blimunda will be issued simultaneously.

From Library Journal
To describe as allegory this story of unnamed characters in an unnamed city who are struggling with an undiagnosed epidemic of "white blindness" is both too simple and too complex. Beyond any emblematic purpose, the characters act out life with all its paradoxes and hidden truths. Ultimately, the greater meaning here is the simple story of human frailty and community in the modern world. In searing prose, both complex and minimal, all this and nothing more is revealed. No wonder Saramago won the Nobel prize this year.

If You Were The Only One...
By M. DeKalb
A bizarre, apparently contagious form of blindness, termed `white blindness' or the `white sickness' has begun effecting people starting with the initial contractor and spreading to those person he encounters and likewise in typical chain fashion.

The government takes steps to quarantine the blind and the potentially infected to ensure the contagion doesn't spread. Much of the first half of the book revolves around the horrors the blind suffer while they're in quarantine.

Amongst the blind is a sighted woman who, with the best of intentions snuck in with her husband feigning blindness herself. While letting nobody know she's sighted she assists to the best of her ability while the Army attempts to keep the blind caught inside the once abandoned asylum.

This is essentially a detailing of the moral vicissitudes of humanity. Here we witness thievery, rape, moral depravity, fear, lust, joy.

Once on the outside the escapees find the world in a similar state only upon a larger magnitude.

A very interesting story, and justifiably a Nobel winner.
Some aspects that are quite potent are the apocalyptic theorem: "What if" the world went blind and you were the only sighted person left?

There are a multitude of philosophical tenants however it seems predominantly existential in that it's a survival story where people make the most of their disability or cease to be.
The absurdist quality of what occurs strikes only on the surface but the moral depth revealed, which not one of the characters seems ultimately concerned about, shows how existentially based the story truly is.

The writing style itself is unique. No proper names, very little punctuation and only capital letters to indicate where another person begins speaking. I swear the comma and quotation don't really exist in this work.

A Serious Disquisition into the Human Condition
By Susan Harrison
Starting with a dystopian premise in which everyone is afflicted with a 'white blindness', Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago creates a disquisition into the human condition. What makes us human? How very fragile is veneer of civilization, civility, decency? In breathtaking language, Saramago observes the human condition as it unfolds in various conditions. He also creates a chilling allegory of the 20th century. Are we blind? Do we not see what we do to others? Do we not see what we are doing to our world? Do we just not see? From chilling cruelty and violence to a heart-rending examinations of love and beauty. Sight alone does not make us human, but the insight that defines the categories that we ordinarily use to understand who we are and our responsibilities to one another and our environment is thoroughly vested in this sense.

Not an easy read, but the beautiful language (even in the most terrifying passages) makes the journey abundantly worthwhile.

How to be Blind.
By J.P.P.
A very interesting book. Apparently, the author did not live to finish it, but only the very ending is missing - and by then, everything important has been handled.

The book is about the spread of a disease that leaves its victims blind. The author effectively tells the story, giving the reader a heavy dose of the frustration and despair that one would go through becoming suddenly completely blind. The book is written in a difficult style - few discernable paragraphs, it can be difficult to follow dialogue. This may simply be a matter of the book having been a first draft, but as I thought about it, it was also a very effective way to tell a story about people who could no longer use normal visual cues to guide them. If the form was intended, it is brilliant. If it is an accident of the author's untimely demise, it is serendipity.

THE existentialist play
By Evan
As an actor/aspiring playwrite/existentialist I figured this was right up my alley. It was. I borrowed No Exit a while ago, and read it straight through twice (once during an important math class, and later during chemestry). I'm buying my own copy now. Don't just read this (or anything...especially plays) only once! Do you think Paul McCartney only listened to Stevie Wonder once? (wink to anyone who can identify this quote) This is a great play, even if you're not into reading plays, or not into philosophy. The Bauhaus theatre dictum of form following function is great to keep in mind, as this is similar to didactic theatre. The post before mine is a bit misleading in writing it off as 'weird' and an unconventional view of hell. It could be both things if you want to stay in the shallow end all of your life. No Exit is best read with an understanding of the anti-naturalism, but this is only to understand why it's 'weird' and is not nessesary. I don't want to tell you how to interperate the play or anything, so I won't go into why it is not an unconventional view of hell. If you want to know, or discuss the play (or pretty much any other play/theory) IM me on AIM: Digestingtrevor or Email me at Don't_spam_spit@the-cowboy.com Just remove 'don't spam' from it. Know also Sartre was not primarilly a playwrite. He was a prominant existentialist philosopher/essayist, but turned to playwriting (thank god[though he won't respond!]) as a new medium for expression. He's also quite good as a playwrite for a philosopher! REALLY good! It's great to be frustrated with the characters and really feel like you are going insane. (possibly the birth of reality TV? it's funny how much it is like the real world.) This is a GREAT read for the Arist(of all mediums),philosopher, and the person who just wants to read something cool. I suggest this book to all different types of people, and they all love it. You can easilly read this with no desire to put any interperative thought into it, and love it just as much as if you want to delve into it's infinate levels of meaning and relevance. It is both entertaining and enlightening.

A Library Journal Best Book of 2015
A NPR Great Read of 2015

The Internet in Russia is either the most efficient totalitarian tool or the device by which totalitarianism will be overthrown. Perhaps both.

On the eighth floor of an ordinary-looking building in an otherwise residential district of southwest Moscow, in a room occupied by the Federal Security Service (FSB), is a box the size of a VHS player marked SORM. The Russian government’s front line in the battle for the future of the Internet, SORM is the world’s most intrusive listening device, monitoring e-mails, Internet usage, Skype, and all social networks.

But for every hacker subcontracted by the FSB to interfere with Russia’s antagonists abroad—such as those who, in a massive denial-of-service attack, overwhelmed the entire Internet in neighboring Estonia—there is a radical or an opportunist who is using the web to chip away at the power of the state at home.

Drawing from scores of interviews personally conducted with numerous prominent officials in the Ministry of Communications and web-savvy activists challenging the state, Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan peel back the history of advanced surveillance systems in Russia. From research laboratories in Soviet-era labor camps, to the legalization of government monitoring of all telephone and Internet communications in the 1990s, to the present day, their incisive and alarming investigation into the Kremlin’s massive online-surveillance state exposes just how easily a free global exchange can be coerced into becoming a tool of repression and geopolitical warfare. Dissidents, oligarchs, and some of the world’s most dangerous hackers collide in the uniquely Russian virtual world of The Red Web.

Review
"Having demonstrated the resurgent power of Russia's secret services in their first book, The New Nobility, Soldatov and Borogan devote much of The Red Web to tracing the roots of modern Russia's surveillance programs back to the KGB. It is a convincing effort, as the authors take the reader back to the 1950s and show how, for more than six decades, the Soviet and then Russian state sought to apply its best minds and, eventually, its best technology to the task of knowing who was doing what, when, where and why." - OpenDemocracy

"This unusual book describes a significant and concealed aspect of current Russian politics. The most troubling aspect of theRed Webmay be its implication for Russia's evolution and its accommodation with the West." -Library Journal,Editors' Fall Picks

“[Soldatov and Borogan] pull at the roots of the surveillance system in Russia today, and their research leads them quickly to the paranoid society of the Soviet Union.” —The Wall Street Journal

"A well researched and disturbing book by two brave Russian authors.” —The Economist

"A gripping book about of the internet and its censorship in post-Soviet Russia... Having covered technology and the security services from the start of their careers in the 1990s, the two Russian journalists have accumulated expert knowledge few can match. “A masterful study of the struggle between the Kremlin’s desire to control information and the unruly world of ordinary digital citizens.” —The Guardian (UK)

"[An] excellent, highly readable tale of the ongoing struggle to control digital life in Russia. ...[Soldatov and Borogan] have gone on to become foremost experts on the Russian secret services, and count among the country’s few remaining practicing investigative journalists." —Los Angeles Review of Books

"Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan, two of Russia’s top investigative journalists specializing in espionage, have given us a thrilling account of the online war between Russian surveillance and digital protesters. ... Fascinating and in-depth history of the Russian Internet since its foundation
By Veni Markovski
It took me about 24 hours to read the whole book - and when I closed the last page, I felt like, well - I want to read more!

It is an in-depth history of the Russian Internet, and the way it has developed since its very first days.

Putting aside the even more history about the phone communications interception and monitoring (which, by the way, is also amazing - just search the names of the people, who 'worked' there - Lev Kopelev and Alexander Solzhenitsyn; and you may be surprised to find out what they did there), the part about the Internet development is quite precise*.

The authors have done a number of interviews, and have used public (and obviously some not-so-public) sources of information, and have managed to put them in an order that makes it an intriguing reading, at moments catching the reader's breath.

The reader (in particular the reader from the USA) might be also fascinated by the description of Mr. Snowden's adventures in Russia - there are some facts, which were not widely known until this book was published.
The American reader will also find more details about the authors of the Russian Internet policy - and these details are much more precise and factual, than similar accounts, shared for example by Richard Clarke in his book Cyber War.

Here's a quote from the book, which is among my favorites (p. 304):
"[Kolesnikov] insisted that what the authorities had done to the Internet was entirely immaterial: 'Look, did it affect your morning coffee?'"

Today, a year after this conversation took place, the Russian Internet continues to change, and develop, and in some cases, it may have affected the morning coffee of some people.

I highly recommend this book - you will have fun reading it.
_______
* - I happened to have worked and traveled a lot of times to Russia since 1990s, and especially in the first decade of the XXI century, so I can confirm personally many of the stories that are described in the book as factually well written.
** - On the picture - my copy of the book, with preferred food and drink for such a reading.

There is nothing nice I can say about the Cheka's newest abbreviation - ...
By TruthSeeker
You need to read this book if you are concerned about government surveillance anywhere, or if you are a student of Russian history. The authors give us a concise history of surveillance both in and out of the former Soviet Union and today's Russia. The treatment of government response to new technology is enlightening and cause for concern.
There is nothing nice I can say about the Cheka's newest abbreviation - FSB. It is just a new name for a bunch of thugs wrapped in government titles. Putin is a former intel officer who has maneuvered his way into a dictatorship. I feel sorry for the citizens of Russia who deserve better.
This book is a keeper.

The Russian Internet was broken the day it was created
By Dominic Basulto
“The Red Web” is the definitive account of how the Kremlin has thoroughly co-opted the Russian Internet, turning it into an effective tool for the modern surveillance state. It's also a haunting commentary on how the Russian Internet was doomed from the outset, despite all its early promise during the Yeltsin era. As Soldatov and Borogan explain, Russia was locked into an inferior product — an Internet that was only marginally free and expressive — thanks to the way information was viewed by the repressive Soviet state. Where the book gets bogged down is in all the details of the Soviet era -- but it does a great job of outlining the key players in today's digital landscape. If you've been following all the twists and turns of how the Kremlin is trying to get foreign companies to relocate their servers to Russian soil and all the debate over which sites should be censored and why, this book offers a fascinating back story.

Utilitarianism: For and Against, by J. J. C. Smart, Bernard Williams

Two essays on utilitarianism, written from opposite points of view, by J. J. C. Smart and Bernard Williams. In the first part of the book Professor Smart advocates a modern and sophisticated version of classical utilitarianism; he tries to formulate a consistent and persuasive elaboration of the doctrine that the rightness and wrongness of actions is determined solely by their consequences, and in particular their consequences for the sum total of human happiness. This is a revised version of Professor Smart's famous essay 'an outline of a system of utilitarian ethics', first published in 1961 but long unobtainable. In Part II Bernard Williams offers a sustained and vigorous critique of utilitarian assumptions, arguments and ideals. He finds inadequate the theory of action implied by utilitarianism, and he argues that utilitarianism fails to engage at a serious level with the real problems of moral and political philosophy, and fails to make sense of notions such as integrity, or even human happiness itself. Both authors are agreed on utilitarianism's importance: it cuts across a number of different philosophical disputes and combines a systematic account of mata-ethical problems with a distinctive and substantive moral stand. It thus is, or involves, philosophy in both the traditional and the narrower, professional sense of the word, and is a key topic (often the first topic) in introductory philosophy courses. This book should also be of interest to welfare economists, political scientists and decision-theorists.

Terrific Starting Point
By A Customer
This terrific little book was my introduction to ethical philosophy in college. This is, in fact, the best way to introduce anyone to real philosophy: Present an important philosophical problem and let two very intelligent, articulate, and well-educated people of opposing views & good faith argue the merits, demerits, and difficulties inherent in a particular theory. In fairly clear and straightforward prose, Smart and Williams plunge right into the matter and hash it out with meticulous care. Smart offers a sophisticated version of Utilitarianism for our consideration. Williams draws out the implications of it and shows how Utilitarian ethics contains contradictions and potentially repellent outcomes. (Although Williams never makes it explicit in this book, he adheres to a sophisticated modern version of classical virtue ethics, a sort of refined Nicomachean ethics.)
This may not be the last word on Utilitarianism, but it is certainly one of the most intelligent and insightful. A perfect entree to ethical philosophy, that endlessly fascinating & vitally important dialogue about how we ought to live our lives.

Superb
By snalen
The reviewer from Berkley could not be more right in recommending this book as an introduction to modern moral philosophy. Smart and Williams are two of the most brilliant and important philosophers of the last century and both are brilliantly clear and engaging communicators. The result is not just good introduction but a book that takes you right to the cutting edge of the subject. Smart contributes a splendidly bold and clear headed statement and defence of a form of act utilitarianism (`the view that the rightness or wrongness of an action depends only on the total goodness or badness of its consequences, i.e. on the effect of the action on the welfare of all human beings (or perhaps all sentient beings)'). Williams then provides a peerlessly brilliant and devastating critique of that same theory. The reader is left with a clear understanding both of why so many people as sensible and intelligent as Smart consider utilitarianism just obviously right and why so many people as humane and thoughtful as Williams think it is just crazy. If you are interested in philosophy, then, it's a wonderfully rewarding read. Indeed it's a great thing to read if you aren't sure whether you re interested in philosophy or not. If you find Williams on consequentialism, integrity and negative responsibility a dull read you will probably find pretty well any philosophy dull and you can safely conclude that the subject is not for you.

The best book on Utilitarianism money can buy!
By Amazon Customer
Ive read a lot of books on Utilitarian Ethics, and this, with out a doubt the best! Smart is concice and cercumspect in his presentation of what has become the most plausible and appliable form of consequentialism, i.e. Utilitarianism.
Williams presents extreemly perseptive critiques of Utilitarianism in perticuler, and consequentialism in general. Unfortunately for Williams it seems to me after 16 years of Ethical study, that Utilitarianism, as tough a theory as it is, is the most viable that has yet been discoverd. R.A.M. 3-15-00
