This is book is a must read for all those who are seeking the Divine. This is a beautiful rendering from the original book, updated for translation, but not altered. Shirdi Sai Baba’s stories based on his life as an amazing Divine soul and how through these stories he has touched and continues to awaken and heal the openhearted seekers and the curious seekers of God. I truly experienced the blessings of Baba on completion of this book. The book has beautiful illustrations of original art work by Baba devotees along with original photos of Baba. I have read this through several times and now it is inspiring to just randomly open a page and read one of the stories to propel you into a day with gratitude and love!

"Shirdi Baba is the avatar for this yuga. He is the number one perfect incarnation of Dattatreya. Baba always said Allah Maalik Ek--God is one. The inner meaning of this was all the three (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) were in him, Dattatreya. No doubt, he was a purely Shiva character. A Shiva Datta character means Shiva with a begging bowl living a very simple life. He had amazing abilities, but rarely showed them. He meditated for fifty years, non-stop. Non-stop means he only took off one to two hours each day to go into the village and ask for food. Then again he sat in his Dwarkamai, meditating and doing his spiritual process. After some years, he took his meditation energy and made four flames in a room underground. Then he sealed that room to keep those lights burning to store his meditation power, all his energy, for millions of people to be able to receive that energy in the future. Whatever top miracles any saint did on this planet, Baba did ten times more powerfully. It was proved in that village by thousands of stories. He passed October 15, 1918, but still his soul exists. Excellent text!

I am finding this text to be excellent. It is fairly well written and as understandable as I expect a text of this nature. According to my professor it is the best criminology textbook written in the English language. I will be keeping this text after my class is finished, as a reference. Interesting chapter on history of crime as well (I was afraid that chapter would be boring).

A criminology primer for law professionals, tutors and learners

I became aware of Professor Newburn's new work on both theoretical and applied criminology from BTEC. This book is well suited for the beginner, the professional training to become involved in any or all aspects of the criminal justice process, and the interested learner whose career may overlap with the role of the criminologist in the public services.

When I started teaching Criminology for the law undergraduate some 20 years ago, the basis of theoretical criminology had remained relatively static although some exciting new studies had appeared linking research from the Chicago School and anomie with the overtly political New Criminology and expanding feminist/gender issues. Mixing these strands of radical and realist theories with the complete confusion of current applied criminology measures and the failures of the legal framework of modern law enforcement is a monumental modern task and Newburn excels with his objective in this modern work presented with thought and just the right amount of detail.

The use of additional website support for both learners and tutors is another plus factor. I was unsure of how well the illustrations would fit in here as I have written a number of different versions of the basic content of this book for other organisations at both GCE and undergraduate level and found merging the dry written word with charts, tables and photographs actually does help when presenting the subject to learners where I use differentiation practice

My most recent teaching assignment required the teaching of part of this subject for BTEC Public Services courses and from reflective practice, I do recommend this book as a great primer for those who need a framework of criminology for their public service careers. It blends the wholly academic elements with the vocational aspects of BTEC highly effectively and gets the balance right for the range of learners we have.

The contents cover 36 headings in six parts. Like the views of my colleagues teaching this subject, there are always going to be problems with keeping this work up to date for Parts 4, 5 and 6. Reforming criminal justice, its current critical issues, and researching criminology which I am currently reading for post graduate studies is tackled well, and I would envisage web involvement being much more important as this work goes into another edition.

Clearly, Newburn's broad approach is to be welcomed because it is accessible and authoritative being lively at all times with an intellectual sparkle which gives the reader encouragement to explore controversial issues: all the more controversial as `law'n'order' remains at the top of the political agenda with the economy, presumably remaining so for some time to come.

Tim Newburn's experience shines through brilliantly here, and I know my colleagues who teach this subject welcome his approach as being at the top of the tree for either BTEC or the more formal academic qualifications and it is the best book of its type for us at the moment, linking the more established teaching with innovation at a time of turbulence in the Home Office- extracts are great for PowerPoint, too, even though PPPs are not everybody's ideal for teaching, but it works with Newburn's approach.

So thank you, Willan Publishing, for this contribution to the teaching of criminology today.

fantastic book

Extremely good and useful book for any lawyer. Contains all the information one might expect from criminology textbook. As for the quality, it is outstanding and I'm very content. The quality of the book is lot much better than those law books for which I have paid lot more money. Buy it if you are interested in criminal law and criminology, you definitely won't regret it.

GREAT FUN & yet very educational...understanding how the brain really works!

This is the first classic book on visual illusions by J Richard Block, the author, who also wrote a second book entitled 'Seeing Double'. Both are printed in large format. In fact, there is also a card deck which amplifies the earlier book.

Both books discussed the phenomena of human perception through hundreds of perplexing visual illusions & mind-bending eye tricks gathered from around the world.

The entire collection in the two books is definitely amazing and unique in some way.

The best learning experiences I got out of these two wonderful books are a greater understanding - & appreciation - of how the brain really works. I often use many of the visual illusions to demonstrate the principal operating principles of the brain, particularly the salient aspects of selective recognition and patterning. I have also found that some of them have been very useful in demonstrating cognitive traps & pattern interrupts, especially in the context of personal creativity.

Although the visual illusions are fun to play with, I find them very educational, just as what I have elaborated.

There is another type of visual illusions, known as random dot stereograms (some people call them 3D visual illusions), which are more fun but somewhat harder to play with. Nevertheless, they are also very educational, especially in understanding - & appreciating - how the brain really works!

the publishers ruined this wonderful book

The concept and content of this book are amazing, however the publishers and printers have totally ruined it. The book is badly printed, and the whole book is in black and white although some of the illusion pictures only work in color. If you google some of the images, it then only becomes apparent what the authors were trying to demonstrate. a 6th grade child with basic photoshop skills could have tidied up the images and would have made it a great book. I must compliment Amazon for the great effort they have made to resolve my disappointment, and the concern they have shown.

All-right,but not one of the better books on Optical Illusions.

As a longtime enthusiest of Optical Illusions;I found this book somewhat hard to review.There are some things about it that are pretty good,while there are other things,to put it simply, mundane.First,the good things.It has a good hard cover and dust jacket;which would make it a fairly good choice for elementary schools or libraries.It might also be a fairly good choice for home use if one just wanted a simple basic book of Optical Illusions.The other things that separate this book from the many other excellent one on the subject are:First there are no color illustrations ,and many illusions,including many in this book, cry for the use of color.This is obviously seen by glancing at the back of the dust jacket.Two of the illusions shown there don't even work without color.While the book has a lot of illusions,over 250,almost all of them are classic and found in most books of illusions.In other words,if you have ever seen ,or own any books of Illusions;don't expect to see anything new or fresh here.There is usually a bit of explanation with each illusion;but it is more off a caption and very brief in history,originator or scientificr,mathematical,or artistic explanation.The Index is quite detailed and should help finding the illustrations.There is also good list of references ,but hardly any mention of the many excellent books on Optical Illusions that have been published over the years,and on ones that I have reviewed,such as by M.C. Escher,Sarcone and Waeber,Seckel,and others.What you get instead, is a lot of references to Psychology books,magazines and papers that would be the stock and trade of University Psychology departments ;and by the way,where the authors got most of the illusions in this bbook.Really,not much use for the average reader.This is also indicated by the long detailed list of copyright acknowledgements.
I might also add,as I have also done on some of my laster Reviews,that there is now a plethora of information and Optical Illusions to be found on the Net and YouTube.Here you can see the importance of color,and partucularly the application of motion. .When you see thethe silhouette of the balet dancer spin one way,then another,well,it's a slam dunk!
