The key to understanding this book is

I am doing pre-reqs for nursing school. Of course physiology is a required course. I have to say at first I absolutely hated this book. I am new to sciences and I found this book NOT to be intended for the science neophyte. HOWEVER, this book was assigned reading so I was forced to contend with it. I just finished physio and I got an A for the course. I found that the key to understanding this expensive book was through my purchase of a very inexpensive book which gave me the best OVERVIEW of the fundamentals of physiology. That book is the 2009 Edition of "Campbell's Physiology Notes" by John Campbell. YOU must get the 2009 edition. It is listed here at amazon but Amazon says it is currently unavailable when in fact this is a brand new book. There is a way to get this book. Just google the words "campbellteaching and UK" and order the book directly from campbell's site.

If you want to see what I mean about how John Campbell's 2009 inexpensive book gets you through this Fox textbook: just try to read the section on Osmosis in this book and then go to youtube and watch John Campbell's video explanation of osmosis. He has several videos at youtube but watch the Osmosis one. THIS GUY IS AMAZING! If you need to understand some important physio concepts this is the guy to watch and his book is a great inexpensive book to own. AFter watching that youtube video of John Campbell's I bought his entire DVD collection.

I suggest you watch the video: just google the words "campbellteaching and youtube" and watch his video on Osmosis. THEN while you are at it google the words "campbellteaching and UK" and order his new 2009 "Campbell's Physiology Notes" (physiology book) and then you will not only better enjoy and appreciate this Fox Physiology book but FOR SURE you will better understand at least if you are new to all of this. THAT IS HOW I got my A in my physiology course. So I don't hate this Fox book any more, and I enjoyed many parts of it after reading and watching Campbell. This Fox book is just intended for a reader who is clear on the fundamentals so I got that from the Campbell book and then better appreciated this book.

Good book, easy to read and well organized

I am almost done using this textbook for my intro physiology class. I have been very pleased with the overall readability and simplicity of the book. Fox explains things clearly and with just the right amount of detail (for an intro course). There are a few areas here and there that were a bit confusing, and my professor pointed out a few errors, but no text book is perfect.

Also, if this book is required for a class, you can probably get a way with using one of the older editions as the changes from edition to edition are minimal (renumbering or reordering graphs, or sometimes just changing the colors of the graphs!). In my class students used everything from the 11th edition to the 9th edition. The international edition is identical to the US one, not to mention cheaper and lighter (it's softcover).

plethora of images aptly supplement the text

This is the textbook used in my bioengineering physiology class, and overall, it thus a great job of covering the basics of physiology without going too deep into the details. You get a nice view of the big picture and even get a lot of help understanding the concepts because of all the figures and images that they have included in this book. This would thus be an appropriate textbook if you're teaching yourself physiology as it applies to humans.

If you're looking for something that goes into more detail, more appropriate for a medical or professional bookshelf, I highly suggest checking out Guyton and Hall's Textbook of Medical Physiology. It is a book that will certainly be a great addition to the bookshelf of physicians and bioengineers alike.

Horrible Reading

My teacher assigned this book for my Labor Relations course and I wish he picked out a better book. The definitions are awful and you have to read them like 3 times until you fully understand what information the book is trying to provide. There was one part that really made me think that this book was thrown together in a couple of minutes. One sentence in this book stated that, "Southwest airlines was not unionized." My aviation management teacher saw something wrong with this statement because Southwest is heavily unionized. I think the author had a particular issue in his life and was trying to smurf it off in his book. This book is definately not for beginning students, unless you have time to decifer what the author is trying to say..... I could talk more about how terrible this book is, but I think you get the point

One of the worst textbooks around

Normally I don't have problems reading the texts schools use but this one is the worst book I've ever had to read. My instructor provided outlines of each chapter that were provided by the author. Without those I would not have been able to make heads or tails of this book.The author needs to ake this book less dry and more learning friendly.

Dry Reading

Sometimes books can't help but to cover dry material. This book does not excell past being extremely dry. The book is well documented, thorough, and comprehensive. The eight edition is aesthically pleasing, but still does not seem to achieve the ability to make itself an easy read. I would highly recommend another book for this study, or using this one as background information for study.

I only paid 1 cent for this textbook

Ok so yes I did have to pay 3.95 for shipping and handling but that was nothing this text book is an earlier edition to the one my professor asked use to use however it has all the same material as the later edition and with over $130.00 difference in the price making me one happy camper...
The textbook came in great condition with all related Materials attached. What a Great buy...

Book was in physically bad shape. ( I had to repair the binding) plus lots of prior notes in margins. The description wasn't so accurate. But price point for this text was good.

Other peoples were interested in the irregular motions of the planets and in the way in which the times of rising of the various stars varied through the year, so we need to know about these phenomena, i. e. , about retrogression and about heliacal rising, to usc the technical terms. The book opens with an explanation of these matters. Early astronomers did more than just gaze in awe at the heavenly bodies; they tried to understand the complex details of their movements. The earliest investigations that can be called scientific are concerned with the sky; they are the beginnings of astronomy. Many early civilizations produced astronomical texts, and several cultures that left no written records left monuments and artifacts - ranging from rock paintings to Stonehenge - that show a clear interest in astronomy. Civilizations in China, Mesopotamia, India, and Greece had highly developed astronomies, and the astronomy of the Mayas was by no means negligible. Greek astronomy, as developed by medieval Arab philosophers, evolved into the astronomy of Copernicus. This displaced the Earth from the stationary central position that almost all earlier astronomies had assumed. Soon thereafter, in the first decades of the seventeenth century, Kepler found the true shape of the planetary orbits and Galileo introduced the telescope for astronomical observations. This book covers the history of astronomy from its earliest beginnings to this point, which marks the beginning of modern instrumental and mathematical astronomy. The work of earlier astronomers, of all civilizations, remains as a triumph of the human intellect.

Very disappointing

Much of the content of this book is simple but tedious arithmetic and graphical presentations which give the impression of an unconvincing mix of documented fact and conjecture.
Ample inclusion of much equally unconvincing and largely irrelevant terminology ("The Babylonians also measured... ...using a unit called SHE which literally means 'barley corn'") does little to shed light on the subject.
One could go on but perhaps most telling is the author's allocation of 6 pages (one mostly blank and two and a half containing charts and a photograph) to "Arabic Astronomy," from which came many star names still in use throughout the world and which, some might say, passed almost the entire heritage of astronomy to the Europeans when their commercial interests turned them to navigation at the end of the 15th century (a point not mentioned by the author - his characterization of the Hellenistic Greeks as "Europeans" would probably have been disputed by any member of that ancient culture).
