About the Author

H. P. Richter wrote the first edition of Wiring Simplified in 1932. W. C. Schwan was the author of subsequent editions of Wiring Simplified until 2002. F. P. Hartwell became the new author of Wiring Simplified—after W. C. Schwan—with the 40th edition. He is the secretary of the Massachusetts Electrical Code Advisory Committee and the author of the American Electricians’ Handbook and Practical Electrical Wiring. He lives in Amherst, Massachusetts.

A Great Reference for the Handyman

This is a great resource for those handymen who are comfortable working with electricity. This book is very easy to read and not only covers the enforced National Electrical Code (NEC) but also provides detailed installation procedures of home electrical material/devices such as wiring, receptacles, lighting fixtures & etc. With prolific pictures, it shows devices and material available and required for specific tasks. In addition it explains & shows correct installation procedures.
As a retired electrical engineer for 18 years, I purchased this book to re-familiarize myself with the latest NEC codes. I can attest to this books value to those having a small or large electrical project and wish to install a safe installation.

Wouldn't be without it

This book (or its previous editions) has been invaluable to this do-it-yourself owner of four different homes over the years. With the book in one hand and tools in the other I have been able to rewire much of two older homes, newly wire finished basements in two others and completely rewire a remodelled kitchen (all up to the current code of the time). The material is well organized and presented in language understandable to the non-professional.

THE BEST HANDS-ON, HOW-TO WIRING BOOK FOR THE LAYMAN AND TRADESMAN
I've owned and used and loaned and lost various editions since the 60's, both in my home and on the job as a carpenter/stagehand. It's Indispensable for the once-in-a-while electrician or homeowner whether he/she is adding a single outlet or upgrading a new kitchen. Working with this book will give you confidence in the safety, utility, and re-salability of your project. Nothing extraneous, excellent index, gender friendly. No condescension.
The illustrations are the best in the business, and there are an awful lot of fancy wiring books to choose from. The precise (and time honored) diagrams and carefully edited text provide the reader with the information needed to do a good, safe, and efficient job.

Very well written and helpful book. I'm a first time Canon DSLR user and trying to learn all the features and menus using the provided user manual was extremely frustrating. This book is well organized and comprehensive, with useful examples and tips.

Excellent, comprehensive review of the Canon EOS 80D

I am reviewing the Kindle and Print version of the book. I have always enjoyed the Dummies series for many subjects.

I had recently acquired the 80D, and I wanted to be able to work the camera to its full potential. Every function is reviewed, and the photographic examples are detailed. Although you can learn from reading the manual, there are practical tips and examples that just don't come through when reading a manual that you can learn from reading this book.

There are extensive tips and shortcuts that help understanding the numerous functions of this system. After reading through the book, and then applying the lessons, I have been much less intimidated by the camera.

As in any For Dummies series, there are icons for "Tips", "Warnings", "Technical Stuff", and "Remember".

The writing style is clear and concise. Numerous examples are outlined in the book.

A major advantage that I had with the Kindle version is that I can read the book from anywhere, on my iPad or iPhone. It is easily accessible in those times when I didn't pack the manual. Since I can highlight and add notes, I can quickly reference the information.

If you're requiring the access of this book on the fly, I highly recommend the Kindle version. However, I do recommend printouts of the cheat sheet for the quick reference of various functions.

This is a great book if you are a new Canon 80D user. I just bought a canon 80D and I was clueless on how to use it so i bought this book. It is really detailed and teaches you step by step how to use it and everything you need to know about each setting. I'm still reading and learning about my camera..I love it !

Like its predecessors, The Bastard King (2003) and The Chernagor Pirates (2004), the good-natured, leisurely final installment in Chernenko's Scepter of Mercy trilogy subverts the familiar fantasy tropes with its polite, understated swordplay and minimal, often mundane sorcery. In the kingdom of Avornis, an unseen array of Olympian gods and goddesses has ejected a disgruntled god known as the Banished One. He may also be unseen, but the Banished One is a noisy frequenter of the nightmares of his victims, whom he attempts with mixed success to suborn. The author excels at characterization, in particular of the pair of down-to-earth Avornis kings: Grus, the thinking man's head of warfare, and Lanius, the thinking man's thinker. The two rivals must set aside their differences if they are to regain the scepter that will thwart the Banished One's evil machinations. Some readers may be annoyed not to be let in on Lanius's secret plan to do so, though all should be satisfied with the natural, somewhat bittersweet ending that leaves the door open for further wise and humorous adventures.

While it helps to have read this book's two predecessors, The Bastard King (2003) and The Chernagor Pirates [BKL Mr 1 04], the third book in the series stands on its own without difficulty. The land of Avornis has suffered the enmity of the banished god for a long time. The only weapon that can withstand him is the scepter of mercy. Now Lanius and Grus, the two kings of Avornis, just may be able to recover the scepter. Lanius has a plan that must remain secret from the banished one. Grus must do battle, for the scepter lies in the lands of the hostile Menteshe peoples. Chernenko's world isn't especially distinctive, but his characterization, dialogue, and plotting keep one involved right up to the twist ending. Good basic fantasy storytelling, especially appealing to readers just beginning to explore the genre. Frieda Murray

Conclusion to Turtledove's "Sceptre of Mercy" trilogy

This is the third volume and climax to the "Scepter of Mercy" Trilogy, which consists of the following books:

1) The Bastard King: Scepter of Mercy, Book One
2) The Chernagor Pirates (Scepter of Mercy, Book 2)
3) The Scepter's Return

These books were written by Harry Turtledove using the pen-name Dan Chernenko. Apparently he felt the books were different from his usual subject matter and wanted to see the reaction they would get without his name. The most recent printings actually do have his name on the cover, followed by "writing as Dan Chernenko".

In the previous volumes, unusual political manouvers caused the situation where the Kingdom of Avornis had two kings at the same time: King Lanius, descended from a long line of kings, and King Grus, the son of a guardsman.

The Kingdom of Avornis is beset by enemies on all sides, particularly by barbarians to the south, in territory ruled by the immortal "Banished one" who used to be a God before the other Gods expelled him from heaven. King Lanius has discovered that the Banished one was previously worshipped as Milvago, the principal god. Milvago has stolen from Avornis a powerful talisman for peace, the Scepter of Mercy, which had been given to the Kingdom of Avornis by the Gods who supplanted him.

Strong rivalry remains between Lanius and Grus, but neither wants to tear the country apart in civil war when they have so many dangerous enemies: both would like to get the Scepter of Mercy back from the Banished one. But strife between Lanius and Grus is not the only possible threat to the peace of Avornis: King Grus has been watching his fellow King like a hawk as long as they have shared the throne but neglected to consider a possible threat from even closer to home.

Meanwhile Lanius has thought of an ingenious scheme to recover the Scepter of Mercy ...

Some readers absolutely hated this series, other, of whom I was one, greatly enjoyed it. There books do have both the strengths and weaknesses of many of Harry Turtledove's books. For example, there is a strong storyline, well crafted and believable characters - but he does tend to repeat things an awful lot. I also had some difficulty with the fact that the Banished One seems to have a kind of selective omniscience: if that sounds like an oxymoron it's because what he knows and doesn't not do not quite make sense.

Milvago has enough awareness of what Lanius and Grus are plotting to be able to send both the kings themselves, and also one of the key players in their plans, horrible nightmares to try to put them off. Yet he doesn't seem to know enough to give his supporters some fairly simple instructions by which he should have been able to make the plan impossible. I suppose since his mortal heroes were up against a defrocked God, Turtledove had to put some limits on how their enemy could use his powers to give them a chance.

There is a similar and more explicitly explained depiction of interaction between pre-industrial humans, and Gods who are much more powerful than humans but neither omnipotent nor omniscient, in a novel which Turtledove published under his real name, Between the Rivers.

Apart from these minor flaws this is a really enjoyable trilogy.

Great Ending for a Series

If you want to read this be sure you've read the Scepter of Mercy and Chernagor Pirates which are the first two stories in this series. Turtledove is absolutely one of the best writers out there. This series draws heavily on his knowledge of Byzantine history for which he earned a Ph.D. The characters are well developed - no cookie cutter heroes here. The pace is deliberate, solutions in real life take time and he conveys this very well. This whole series is classical Turtledove, so if you've been somewhat disappointed with his Yellowstone volcano tales or even the War the Came Early series this is the style I came to appreciate years ago. Since he wrote this series under another name I didn't read them when they first came out over a decade ago. No spoilers, but the ending caught me by surprise. Well worth the read.

Steve Kowit believes, and rightly so, that poetry should show, not tell. The same could be said for good teaching, which is what makes this volume so remarkable. In In the Palm of Your Hand Kowit employs more than 100 poems and excerpts to illustrate his discussions on everything from metaphor to meter to metaphysics. Working your way through this book--and it is work--is like sitting in on a terrific creative-writing seminar, minus the criticism (both constructive and destructive) of fellow students. If you go by the book, you'll have written at least 69 poems by the end. Because of its explication of the basic tenets of poetry, In the Palm of Your Hand might be mistaken for a beginners' book only. That would be a shame. There are so many good ideas here that more experienced poets won't want to miss out; Kowit has lots of exciting ways to invigorate one's writing. (Here's a favorite quick tip: "A good rule of thumb is never to use a word that you're proud of.") In the Palm of Your Hand is also recommended for members of writing groups who are interested in imposing some kind of structure on their meetings.

One of the books I would never be without.

I bought this book just on a whim. It sounded interesting, the reviewers thought it was pretty good and so I sent off for it. That was two years ago, and I have read and reread it pretty much constantly ever since.
His style is friendly, engaging, encouraging, occasionally chiding (in the nicest possible way) and very very inspiring. Each section focuses on specific aspects of writing - writing from memories, working with imagery and metaphor, how (and why) to revise, word music, experimental forms, traditional forms etc etc. Even a section on "Aweful Poems"! And believe it or not, that section was one of the most enlightening.
He uses copious examples from contemporary poets to illustrate the points he is trying to get across, and ends each chapter with a series of exercises to make certain that you understand what you've been reading. Sounds tame, sounds boring, sounds mechanical, but oh, it is not!
The final section - Nuts and Bolts - deals with the business of poetry as a business; the pros and cons of Poetry Workshops, where, when and why to start submitting your poetry. That sort of thing. And one of the nicest touches is the poem selected to end the book - Fleur Adcock's "Future Work" (on page 263, go on, have a look). It pretty much sums up the whole feeling of this book.
The only downside is the certainty of writers cramp afterwards ...

Wonderful Book

What a helpful, inspiring book. The author really helps to make the writing process more productive and less intimidating. He clearly explains how to write different types of poems and gives excellent examples of the types of poems that he talks about. He makes the process much less mysterious and in the process, he inspires the reader. I hadn't had the courage to write any poetry for years. This book has helped me to finally start writing again.

My poetic savior!

As a writing major and tutor at UCSD, I have toted Kowit's book in my backpack as my constant and faithful companion. I've enjoyed witnessing my own as well as others' poetry, and writing in general, improve through the insightful suggestions in this book.
As an instructor, Kowit encouraged me to "have fun" with my writing. This book echoes his personally delivered sentiment, since it masquerades as a fun way to approach writing, but actually is a serious tool for poets who are serious about their craft.
This book helped me to examine my old, bad writing habits and ruts. Now, I hold my trite lines up for my own students to scoff at. If I improved, so could they. Under the tutelage of Kowit's warmth and wisdom, I finally am able to churn out good poetry that my professors compliment me for. No one can stop me now.
Thank you, Steve Kowit, for putting this one in the palm of my hand!
