Readers of Jenny O'Connell's first book for teens, Plan B, will have high expectations for THE BOOK OF LUKE--and they won't be disappointed!

When nice girl Emily Abbot's family moves from Chicago back to Boston in the middle of her senior year, Emily and her two best friends come up with a plan that is not so nice. It's a project for their class time capsule, but it won't be the typical scrapbook or mix CD. They'll write a handbook for guys about girls. And who better to test out their theories on than arrogant Luke Preston? Emily, the three friends decide, will be the perfect person to try it out and report back. After all, Luke would never suspect the nice little Emily he knew way back when...But Emily's not what she used to be.

Before she knows it, however, the experiment has gone horribly wrong. Wrong in that Emily finds herself falling head over heels for her experiment!

THE BOOK OF LUKE is a funny, original story guaranteed to have readers fascinated from first page to last! This fresh, honest novel is full of amazing characters and excellent writing. So... I picked up this book and i didn't know what to think. I was bored one day and decided to read it... this is what i found. In this novel, the story takes you to Chicago to meet the oh-so-nice and always mannerful, Emily Abbott. Emily is class Valedictorian, a Senior in High Scool, has a football player boyfriend, and to top off her oh-so-perfect life... she is just plane nice.
Emily's family informs her that they are moving back to Boston where they origanly moved from. Emily's dad, however, has decided to stay to "think about some things". If this isn't bad enough, Emily's all-star boyfriend broke up with her THE DAY SHE WAS MOVING! So... now Emily is back in private school in Boston. Everything is the same. Her friends haven't changed and everyone still loves the lovable Emily Abbott. When asked about the past three years since she was gone, her friends (Josie and Lucy) tell her not much happened. Not much excpet that Josie's ex-boyfriend was caught cheating on her over christmas-break and broke up with her through email!
The Senior project is due for the traditional senior-time-capsul-project. The girls decide to make a book for boys in the future telling them what they are doing wrong and how to fix it to get a girl. The girls (mainly Lucy and Josie that is) decide that they need to test their theory. They force Emily into making Luke Preston, the hottest guy in school who also happens to be the one who broke it off with Josie, fall in love with her and then breaking his sorry little heart. Too bad Emily ends up falling for her "experiement" instead of wanting to crush him. It also happens that Luke kind of always had a thing for her too.
Emily has to keep the relationship a secret and the whole story takes you along with her little web of lies. Now all she has to do is work her way out of them!
I rated the story five stars because i instintly fell in love with it although sometimes Emily annoys me. Well written, had me on the edge of my seat. JUST READ IT! The worst that will happen is that you don't like it (yea right!) and you can put it down!

Sergei Eisenstein's "October" (1927) is a testament to his technical genius, as well as being one of the most remarkable works of propaganda cinema. With sequences such as the storming of the Winter Palace, Eisenstein recreated the 1917 October Revolution as a heroic spectacle, thus furnishing the fledgling Soviet Union with its founding myth. In this analysis of "October," Richard Taylor asks to what extent the film can lay claim to "authentic" history. He then examines "October"'s relationship to the politics of the period and its contribution to the reinforcement of the Lenin cult and the emergent Stalin cult. Taylor explains both the theory and its application before situating "October" in the wider context of Eisenstein's career.

Richard Taylor is Professor of Politics at the University of Wales Swansea and general editor of the five-volume�BFI edition of Eisenstein Writings, including The Eisenstein Reader (1998).

Helps To Illuminate the Obscure

How clueless was I about the movie October? This clueless: I did not even know it was a silent movie until I actually started watching it. But I had heard of filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein before and knew that October was about the Soviet Revolution. Based on that alone, I picked up this book before watching the movie.

Different than what I expected, true, but the movie was still worthwhile. And this book by Richard Taylor made the experience quite a bit better. Both the silent format of the film as well as multiple references in the movie that are obscure to modern American audiences (not the target audience of October, to be certain) made the initial viewing rather difficult. I may know something of the October Revolution, but not that much, and Eisenstein’s film to commemorate the tenth anniversary contains quite a lot of images and references that Russian viewers of the day could reasonably be assumed to know. This book provided significant guidance that allowed me better sort out what I was seeing.

For example, Eisenstein made heavy use of intellectual montage, in which a series of images were used to convey a single idea. This explained numerous such sequences in the movie, such as the use of religious imagery to convey the idea that religion was in cahoots with the oppressive government and out of touch with the masses.

The book also provided some explanation of less significant figures relevant to the revolution that also provided for a deeper understanding. It is this contextualization that makes this BFI worthwhile. In all, not a bad contribution to the BFI library.

About the Author

Take a stand

This book is fantastic. I couldn't put it down. I have recently completed advocacy training at a domestic violence shelter and this book explains the timeline of violence (starting with emotional) so well and in a way that reaches and educates people. For those people that say "why doesn't she/he just leave the violent relationship" I implore them to read this book.

Reading the background story informative

I don't normally read this genre, but a friend spoke about the book and how it gave context to what happened and that there was much more than the culminating murder of her son.

We rely so much on the media for information when something like this happens and they at best provide a summary.

Reading the details and timeline provide by Rosie Batty of who she is and why she reacted and still reacts to situations resonated with me. It made me realise that those exposed to domestic terrorism are already isolated and are made to believe that they deserve their lives. So finding out what help there is available and which type of help they need must be a daunting task and that due to their lack of self esteem they probably back away at the first hurdle.

This book had so many unexpected twists and turns. It was just detailed enough to draw you into the story while remaining exotic and hot that your mind could fully take in every step of the ride.
