Better than Tunnels

Let's get to the point from the off: Deeper is better than Tunnels. I guess the next question is: how is it better?

First up there is the pacing. Deeper begins where Tunnels left off, with unlikely protagonist Will Burrows still on the trail of his lost, curator father, and finding his friend Chester on board the train that is transferring him to the subterranean hell-hole that is The Deeps. The authors have pulled out the stops in grabbing - and maintaining - the reader's interest; something sorely lacking in the first book.

Secondly there is more depth given to some of the main characters, the relationship between Will and Chester moves from the one dimensional, making the reader care a little more for these two guys. Will's estranged birth-mother is also given some airtime; her personality - feral - based upon her fugitive lifestyle as she keeps one step ahead of the relentless Styx.

To discuss plotline so soon after release would not be fair on those who have not had opportunity to read the tome. Lest to say that I found it an entertaining, albeit mirthless, affair.

So why three stars? Well, for this reader, some issues remain. The narrative remains clunky in places and it is becoming increasingly clear that one of the authors is adept and the other, quite possibly, isn't. The book also comes in at 675 pages and is still in need of a good edit. It has the `well proof-read, but poor copy edited' feel of a self-published book, and the publisher - not the authors - must take responsibility for this.

Gordon's and William's subterranean opus continues. No-one doubts that the world they are creating is inventive and, in this post-Potter hiatus, refreshingly different. I will stay with these guys in the hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel - heck, I'm intrigued enough.

Deeper and Darker

I ordered a copy of Deeper from an UK Amazon third party (I couldn't wait for the US release). I was expecting a lot in the way of character and plot development and I wasn't disappointed. If you enjoyed Tunnels, you'll love this sequel! The numerous nail-biting chapters leave the reader nearly as exhausted as the characters in the story! As dark as the Colony is described in Tunnels, the world of the Deeps is even darker and more deadly. However, the harshness of the environment is not nearly as terrifying as the evil of the Styx. A fantastic series!!

A Really Good Book with Serious Subject Matter

(Note: I read tunnels, thought it was really good and allowed my 12 year old daughter to read it). Deeper is a great book as far as creativity and action/adventure/suspense, and despite tough situations, there is virtually no inappropriate language and no sexual situations. It advocates friendship, loyalty, self-sacrifice and doing what is right. It does have violence, as the main characters are being hunted and fighting for their lives, but it's not too graphic. I also read it prior to giving it to my daughter, and I am going to hold off doing so for a little while longer, as one character contemplates suicide without any regret, and another character advocates a mercy killing and denies the existence of an afterlife. These are great topics to discuss at the appropriate time. I would definitely recommend this book for older teens.

Cancer Research for Everybody

Dr. Sompayrac's book is unique in striking the perfect balance between up-to-date scientific accuracy and entertaining presentation. It flows so naturally and is such a fun to read that one tends not to notice its great learning value. I did not put the book down until its last page and then started from the beginning again. I feel that everyone must read this book!

Well structured review as well as entertaining

First, in the interest of full disclosure, I'll note that I am Dr. Sompayrac's cousin. But don't let that dissuade you -- I have no trouble giving a bad review of a work if I think it deserves such (see my review of "What the Anti-Federalists Were For" as an example).

Like his previous work "How Pathogenic Viruses Work", Lauren has done a very good job is tacking a complex science and distilling it into a very readable book. His approach to the topic (breaking down normal and abnormal cell division, how DNA mutations arise, relating the multiple mutations required for malignancy, etc.) make the topic understandable to even laymen (which I am one).

For non-professionals seeking to understand cancer (and we all know or loved someone who has had it), this book brings a great deal of perspective. Lauren lists common forms of cancer (leukemia, breast/prostate, lung, etc.) in ways that help us understand the differences in types of cancers, how they may be caused, and why cures are difficult to architect.

Though not as entertaining as his "virus" book (which was more interesting due to the nearly endless variety of viruses and their survival mechanisms), his "cancer" book was equally well thought-out, and almost as well written.

I would recommend this work for two audiences: pre-med students and those considering a career in medicine, and laymen who are hungry for knowledge about cancer. If you survived high school biology and genetics-101, very little of this book will be over your head.

Understable and accessible cancer research

Excellent book. It provides an overview of the latest advances on cancer research trying to explain its very complex nature. It does so in a clear and direct way. It is amazing how a deep book on such a complex subject can be made so easy to read.

The concepts are explained step by step. The most representative cancers are throughly explained for the layman.

A good general overview

This book is a good general overview - just make sure a general overview is what you want before buying this book / signing up for a class that uses this book. I'm on chapter 6 and so far I haven't learned anything new. I either knew the information from researching my intended career online or I had learned the info previously in another more specific psych / stat / research book that I have read. I would recommend this book as a starting point if you are interested in the topic of clinical psych - you could then buy other books on more specific aspects of psychology to learn more about them. The book is well written and flows well. At times it is a bit more wordy than necessary, but it is not a confusing read by any means.

An American Tragedy

If you read a great deal, you recognize that only a few books are truly profound and will be regarded as noteworthy among those written in a particular era. Having just finished "Native Speaker" I was both moved, and extremely impressed. This is clearly one of the distinguished books of this generation.
Chang Rae Lee is clearly a man of acute depth and insights, and he eloquently represents distinctly different cultures, and the angst, disillusionment, and metamorphisis arising from survival that affects immigrants. He also probes fundamental issues of family, loyalty, betrayal, and the question of what constitutes success. While he employs Korean, and Korean American prototypes, his themes and issues are fundamentally human, but perhaps distinctly American.
Furthermore, Lee is a superb wordsmith and a beautiful writer, with a masterful command of the English language, which he skillfully and artistically, employs to convey his complex tale and profound concepts.
I was motivated to read this book when I read that this was the book that had been recommended by many as that which diverse, fractious, and iconoclastic NYC should claim as it's own in the trend for each of the nation's cities to focus on a book to read. However, this is an important book for all Americans, as it trully speaks to the American experience. I noted one review compared it to Ellison's "Invisible Man". While I think that it stands alone, if I were to compare it with other American classics they would instead be Dreiser's "An American Tragedy" and Richard Wright's "Native Son". I am very pleased that I chose to read this book; it is noble, touching, and important.

A talented and insightful new writer!

Henry Park, the son of a Korean grocer who lives in New York, is deserted suddenly by his Caucasian American wife. Reflecting back on his life and and the events that lead him to this situation, he considers the way deceipt over his vocation has clouded his marriage. He reviews how his life had been when his dad was alive, when his son was alive, and the lack of understanding by his wife of his Korean culture.
A pervading sense of something having gone wrong opens this book. The search for its cause and more details is the powerful driving force behind this intriguing first novel. Its finest characteristic, however, is the way in which the author expresses what it feels like to be an ethnic Korean growing up in America---the alienation, the anguish, the longing to be a necessary part of the wider culture. It addresses the dichotomy of two divergent cultures that must be embraced by the child of an American immigrant who strives to improve his station in life, the tension that exists between Asians and non-Asians who find themselves living and working side by side, and the intergenerational clash that often occurs between the immigrant generation and its children. NATIVE SPEAKER is an absorbing story and a welcome addition to any growing collection of Asian-American literature.

Literary Review of Native Speaker

This novel depicts the problems involving alienation, isolation, and self-identity crisis that the immigrants face as the minority and outsiders in the American society. This novel takes the structure of detective fiction, developing a story of a spy who investigates an ambitious politician. Its main action concerns an amazingly charismatic New York City councilman, John Kwang, the idol of thousands of immigrant voters in his home district of Queens. Someone wants to see him go down, and it is Henry's job to provide the dirty laundry. Also this story of trust and betrayal is connected together with other, more delicate threads: his troubled relationship with his traditional Korean father, his troubled marriage to his American wife? His Confucian inability to express live to either of them except through silence. Beautifully written and intriguingly plotted, the novel interweaves politics, love, family, and loss as Park starts to make sense of the rhythm of his life. As he does, his experiences illuminate the many-layered immigrant experience in general, and the Asian immigrant experience in particular, in a way that many readers will understand and appreciate. Through the life of Henry Park, the author exposes the alienation and isolation that many immigrants and their children faces from the American society. Also he depicts the conflicts between 1st generation immigrants and 2nd generation America-born children caused from the cultural differences and the incompatible perspectives toward their lives. Through the motif of a spy, the author successfully creates feeling of uncertainty of identity and place from a point view of a perpetual outcast looking at American culture from a distance. Beginning to fear That he has betrayed both Korean and American worlds and belong to neither, the only thing that Henry Park acquired from his life as a spy and an outsider is the confirmation of his true identity filled with pain and sorrow. There are many qualities of this novel that resembles the qualities of Romanticism of Great Gatzby as Henry Park, the hero of the novel, quests for truth of his identity and displays a strong disbelief toward civilization and love toward the nature. Also Henry Park has some characteristics of the hero of Hemingway such as NADA, inability to sleep during night, and the belief of grace under pressure. Who am I? This question is thrown to the author, Chang-rae Lee himself as well as to Henry Park. Even though he immigrated to United States when he was only three, graduated from the Yale University, and established himself as Native Speaker who uses the English as his native language, he still feels that he is an outsider who can not assimilate into American society. For this sense, we could view this novel as author's honest experience of his life. The novel Native Speaker approaches the readers as an important meaning for it deals with racial problem, a peculiar aspect of American society, and boldly exposes the alienation of modern people.

This book is the best book and most comprehensive I have seen written about Asian blepharoplasty. The author is the top expert for Asian eyes and I know patients seek his expertise from all over the U.S. He does many revisions from other doctors as well. I have specialized in plastic surgery myself for the last 20 years and I was Dr Chens patient 22 years ago and a repeat customer this year.

For each field, the major principles of measurement are presented and illustrated with commonly-used airborne instruments, to assess the present capabilities in terms of accuracy, to raise awareness of specific issues with the interpretation of measurements from airborne operations, and to review emerging measurement techniques.

The authors are internationally-recognized experts in their field, who actively contribute to the design and development of modern airborne instrumentation and processing techniques.

While primarily intended for climate, geophysical and atmospheric researchers, its relevance to the solar system makes this work useful to astronomers studying planetary atmospheres with telescopes and space probes.

About the Author

Manfred Wendisch is a full professor and director of the Institute of Meteorology at the University of Leipzig, Germany, and holds a permanent guest professor appointment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. His teaching expertise includes the fields of atmospheric radiative transfer, cloud physics, atmospheric dynamics, and synoptic meteorology, and he is actively involved in numerous research projects focusing on airborne measurements and impacts of atmospheric clouds and their radiative properties.

Jean-Louis Brenguier joined M�t�o-France in 1981 as a researcher on aerosol and cloud physics. From 1998 to 2011, he was the head of the Experimental Research Unit of M�t�o-France. He is now coordinating MET R&D for aviation and also leads the European SESAR project for MET services developments for aviation. Dr. Brenguier is the coordinator of the European Network for Airborne Research EUFAR. Furthermore, he is co-chair of the international committee of the ISPRS for international coordination of airborne activities in environmental research.

Great book for introductory hydrology

I purchased this book for a class I am taking, and the detail the book provides about hydrology is excellent. It covers all of the major principles for hydrology from precipitation and runoff calculations, going into further depth with CN values for overland runoff and much more. Another big topic this book covers well is Evapotranspiration. If you're studying hydrology for the upcoming semester, or you want to learn how to manage water, this book will be great for that.

I think the book is organized well and it is very thorough. I am taking a Hydrology class and we are using this as our textbook. The professor says he has used this book as long as he remembers and he has been teaching the class for over 8 years. He thinks the text is good, but he does not think there are good example or homework problems.

This book covers a lot of handy tools for EVERY fighting game, not just Street Fighter V!

If you are looking for overall training tips, philosophies or gameplans for any fighting game, this guidebook fits for most of them.

The use of this book is not to show you every combo for each character. The goal of this book is to improve every aspect of your game from the ground up and it definitely delivers in spades!

The book covers everything you need to know in a very easy to understand format for casual players wanting to up there game, to players that want to start going pro. You'll never need to buy a fighting game guide again after reading this.

Very well written

The programming languages known as Open Source has always
drawn much attention on me because with this programming language really amazing projects can be
developed, I got this book from a classroom mate, this
book has a lot of basics to understand in a very quick way.
Open Source, also this guide brings numerous commands and their implementations
which makes the assembly of projects easier and proper use of compilers, I
think the guide is very well written and with a semi technical language
facilitating its comprehension; on this occasion this programming book is
accompanied by one of robotics, which as seen emphasizes concepts and
theory of robotics in general, this book explains in a very simple way some
models of robots and how they can be assembled and programmed; These guidelines
will definitely help to increase your knowledge and skills in the computing
field.

excellent guide for beginners and novices

I began to see robotics in college, but the truth is that I was not understanding the teacher, so I asked for a little help and a friend recommended me this book, I can say with good base that is a wonderful guide, it contain very useful theory and also brings some information about the assembly of several models of robots, using this guide I could pass my classes and also I started to like robotics, I must say that it's an excellent guide for beginners and novices in the theme; as plus, this pack brings a wonderful programming guide of Open source which is a great programming language, very renown and known worldwide, the guide explain everything from the basics, to the methods of implementation for more advanced functions, making this guide even better and useful because is not only for beginners but also for intermediate students.

The technology has been advancing with the passage of time and today we see new things created that were difficult to imagine before. I have always been interested in this subject because I find It very exciting to do things using the technology. Robotic has been an advancement for humanity and this has been implemented in many activities done by man and they has been very supportive. My dad gave me this book to gain more knowledge on this issue. Also with this book I learned about Open Source that is a term applied to Software distributed under a license that allows the user access to the software source code and allows you to study and modify It freely, without restrictions on use. This book is very well explained by the writer that makes the reading and understanding easier.
