Then Came You / The Longing - Kyle's story

Book 2 continues with Kyle's story several months later. Kyle is still recovering from the betrayal that happened in book 1, and that means to focus on his business. With that in mind, he confronts Tom Drake about a late payment that Tom owes him. Unfortunately, events go terribly wrong, leaving Kyle guilty for ever thinking about coming to see Tom.

Amelia Drake feels suffocated by all the rules of being a school teacher, but she has to have the job. Her past makes her doubt if she'll ever be able to marry. When a turn of events throw her into a forced marriage with Kyle, she worries what he's going to say and do when he learns the truth.

Both of them have secrets that eventually come out. Can their relationship survive? When tragedy strikes, will they be able to get past the hurts and forgive each other?

This story covers a lot of ground and explores the consequences and risks of immorality, deceit, blackmail, anger, and pride. I liked how each mistake was dealt with and either condemned or changed and forgiven. There was a sense of hope in the end, that the characters were going to learn from their mistakes and move forward with a stronger relationship as the result.

Having access to both titles, I was able to compare them side by side. The difference between the two titles is that The Longing has the romance scenes left in whereas Then Came You only has kisses and makes references to the romance. There are a few instances where I wish the author had just rewritten the scene instead of literally removing it, but otherwise, it flowed well enough.

Heat level in The Longing is about a PG13.
Language is PG for both.

Poor Publishing Effort

Lots of plain old editing mistakes. Sentence fragments. Captioning errors. Continuing paragraphs that lead nowhere. Erroneous dates for events. All this seriously detracts from what could have been a decent reference work. Just outright sloppy proofreading and editorial work. Readers really must verify the content by consulting other reliable sources before accepting some of the facts.

Very messy work.

This book is ok if you can forgive the mistakes. Like the first page I opened the book had a photo of Admiral Doenitz and Albert Speer with the caption reading "...and Albert Speer, Minister of Propaganda." I thought that was pretty big mistake. Its either no one proof read it or the authors had no interest in the subject. Art work is good but it makes you wonder how accurate it is... Like I said it's ok but if you like reading historically accurate books don't buy this. I really wanted to like this!

Ages 5-8. Reinforcing the idea of Hanukkah as a celebration of miracles, Penn gives us a particularly fanciful version of the holiday legend in which a small amount of oil for the menorah lasted for eight days. In Penn's story, it's potatoes, not oil, that are in short supply. Every year at Hanukkah time, Tante Golda removes eight potatoes from her barrel to make the "most delicious latkes in all of Russia," which she shares with all her friends. When a drought leaves her with only one potato at holiday time, she's unable to have her traditional feast. Instead, she shares her only potato with a beggar, a good deed that causes Tante Golda's luck to change. The book's layout--the text is set in ruled columns, and there are odd chunks of unused white space--is distracting. However, the plot is well devised and recounted with verve, and Carmi's illustrations, with their subdued colors and broad, visible brush strokes, effectively evoke a hardscrabble, Eastern European atmosphere, ripe for wondrous things to occur. Tante Golda's potato latkes are the most delicious in all of Czarist Russia; every year at Hanukkah, she likes to prepare a big batch for all her friends and neighbors. One year, potatoes are scarce. Tante Golda has none of her own, so she asks each of her friends if she can borrow just a few. But their cupboards are bare too. Poor Tante Golda is so disappointed--Hanukkah without latkes is like a day without sunshine. Then a miracle occurs, just when things seem their worst, and Tante Golda's Hanukkah feast is saved by divine intervention. The comical illustrations add to the pleasure of this old-fashioned yet wholly fresh story. A recipe for potato latkes, to be followed with adult supervision, adds the final savor. Our Family's Favorite Hanukkah Story

So, what if there is a drought and potatoes are scarce? Tante Golda makes the best latkes in all of Russia! But this year, instead of hosting her usual latke party on the first night of Hanukkah, she can only share the few latkes she can make from one potato with a beggar who appears at her door. Discouraged but still giving, Tante Golda says the Lord will provide.
This warm tale of a kind woman whose generosity shines during a time of deprivation tells a different kind of miracle tale. Give your children a taste of old Czarist Russia and the characters that people Tante Golda's town. Then mix up a batch of latkes yourself and enjoy: the recipe, in case you need one, follows the story.
