I only paid 1 cent for this textbook

Ok so yes I did have to pay 3.95 for shipping and handling but that was nothing this text book is an earlier edition to the one my professor asked use to use however it has all the same material as the later edition and with over $130.00 difference in the price making me one happy camper...
The textbook came in great condition with all related Materials attached. What a Great buy...

Book was in physically bad shape. ( I had to repair the binding) plus lots of prior notes in margins. The description wasn't so accurate. But price point for this text was good.

These directions go through a complicated cycle-much more complicated than the cycle of the phases of the moon from new to full and back to new, and more complicated than the cycle of the rising and setting directions of the sun. Other peoples were interested in the irregular motions of the planets and in the way in which the times of rising of the various stars varied through the year, so we need to know about these phenomena, i. e. , about retrogression and about heliacal rising, to usc the technical terms. The book opens with an explanation of these matters. Early astronomers did more than just gaze in awe at the heavenly bodies; they tried to understand the complex details of their movements. The earliest investigations that can be called scientific are concerned with the sky; they are the beginnings of astronomy. Many early civilizations produced astronomical texts, and several cultures that left no written records left monuments and artifacts - ranging from rock paintings to Stonehenge - that show a clear interest in astronomy. Civilizations in China, Mesopotamia, India, and Greece had highly developed astronomies, and the astronomy of the Mayas was by no means negligible. Greek astronomy, as developed by medieval Arab philosophers, evolved into the astronomy of Copernicus. This displaced the Earth from the stationary central position that almost all earlier astronomies had assumed. Soon thereafter, in the first decades of the seventeenth century, Kepler found the true shape of the planetary orbits and Galileo introduced the telescope for astronomical observations. This book covers the history of astronomy from its earliest beginnings to this point, which marks the beginning of modern instrumental and mathematical astronomy. The work of earlier astronomers, of all civilizations, remains as a triumph of the human intellect.

Very disappointing

Much of the content of this book is simple but tedious arithmetic and graphical presentations which give the impression of an unconvincing mix of documented fact and conjecture.
Ample inclusion of much equally unconvincing and largely irrelevant terminology ("The Babylonians also measured... ...using a unit called SHE which literally means 'barley corn'") does little to shed light on the subject.
One could go on but perhaps most telling is the author's allocation of 6 pages (one mostly blank and two and a half containing charts and a photograph) to "Arabic Astronomy," from which came many star names still in use throughout the world and which, some might say, passed almost the entire heritage of astronomy to the Europeans when their commercial interests turned them to navigation at the end of the 15th century (a point not mentioned by the author - his characterization of the Hellenistic Greeks as "Europeans" would probably have been disputed by any member of that ancient culture).

This book is a masterpiece! It covers early astronomy all around the world, not just all around the Medeterranean. The explainations are also excellent!

excellent and enjoyable

This How to Draw book from the series of that name offers practical skills to capture the likeness and render lifelike features when drawing the head. It gives sample drawings featuring different poses, expressions and skin tones. It starts with an overview of materials then goes on to the basic shape of the head illustrating a face on and side view of the head with the placement of the facial features and the latter are also dealt with in detail too. Exercises to build skill include foreshortening, contour and planar drawings, additive and subtractive charcoal and understanding values, working in black and white on tonal paper and pastel portraits. Tips are included for conveying personality. Each exercise is presented with an overview, step by step instructions and excellent drawings showing the stages of building up a portrait. If you have been having difficulty with any of the above points, or are new to drawing heads, this should set you firmly on the right path. It is thorough, easy to use and I think it will enhance your drawing skills. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

Flimsy booklet

This book does show a lot of good tips for drawing . What I didn't like about this book is that every thing is cramped into as few pages as possible . This is a larger size book as far as the dimensions but it has a lot fewer pages than most drawing books and every thing is just sort of bunched up inside. This comes off as being more of a flimsy booklet than a real book. So, if you don't mind what your paying for this booklet ,then it's ok.

Get this book!

I have a recent Associate degree in Computer Information Systems from DeVry University with GPA 4.0. If you are at the same level with me (that is, got education, but almost no practical experience), this book is for you. Extremely simple and clear explanations, perfect examples.
But, even if you are an experienced programmer and would like to learn C#, I think it's always much better (and more efficient!) to read a well-written book, than something where the author himself doesn't have a clue what the heck he was trying to say...
While reading C#: A Beginners Guide, you don't have to fight your way through the text. This guy really knows how to write easy-to-read tech books.
I recommend it.

Excellant book on the C# language itself using command prompt examples only. Here is yet another C# book that totally ingnores the power of the Visual Studio Integrated Devlopment Environment. I need to know how much work the IDE will do and how much coding is needed to fill in what the IDE won't do.

light and enlightening readingfor the beginner

I read this book on a whim and was surprised at how easily it was understood. The complicated concepts were explained so that anyone could understand them. This book takes a light and accurate approach to a subject full of misconceptions and apprehension for most people. I would recommend this book to anyone nominally interested in astronomy and science fiction, or for anyone who has never seen a satellite in orbit from earth (many are visible to the naked eye). Tom Logsdon writes clearly and intelligently making this subject accessible for most people.

Wish more books were like this

This is one of the most clearly written, easy to understand books I have ever read! Tom Logsdon is a gifted writer. There are hundreds, if not thousands of people knowledgeable enough to write a book on orbital mechanics. But only a handful can explain the subject with such clarity. And fewer still can write in the interesting fashion that Logsdon went for.

Pleasant explanation - and exploration - of Orbital Mechanics

Fun read. I wish all textbooks were like this. The author enlivens the theory of Orbital Mechanics by explaining its history and the colorful personalities of historic figures. The discussion of applications is still very useful, even though the book is a decade old. I think an updated second addition would easily win 5 stars.

Peter Lindeman has produced a work that is both interesting as well as in depth. The American map turtles are a beautiful and unique part of our rivers and this new atlas contains more information about them than anything ever published before.
This book will remain the number one reference on map turtles for many years to come. I highly recommend it.

Turtle information supreme

My son is one of the leading turtle experts and writers in the country. He has found this a great read and feels the contents have added to his knowledge base. The book was a great Christmas gift.

When this book first appeared in 2013 I wondered how much information on map turtles it could possibly have that was not already covered in the 72 pages on Graptemys in the colossal volume “Turtles of the United States and Canada, 2nd Edition” (Ernst and Lovich. 2009. John Hopkins University Press, Baltimore. 827 pp.)? The Map Turtle and Sawback Atlas is an excellent book with 460 pages containing a wealth of new information on these exceptionally beautiful turtles. The text is well written and comprehensive. The maps delimit state and county boundaries with relevant rivers illustrated in blue and dots for locality records, unfortunately museum specimens are not identified. One of the few criticisms I have is that there are no synonymies, not even a basic checklist of map turtles with the authors of the species and dates of publications, although “taxonomic history” is discussed in each of the species accounts. This is another volume in the “Animal Natural History Series” from the University of Oklahoma Press which has published a number of fine books on North American herpetofauna, however like most of the books in the series, the color photographs are often very small and sometimes of poor quality (no doubt a criticism for the editors and publisher and not the authors). Although this book leans slightly to the science/technical side, I think there is much here that many armatures and hobbyist with interest for in-depth information on map turtles would find useful and accessible.
