A unique effort...

Potential energy surfaces are instrumental in all aspects of nanoscale phenomena and they are well suited to be treated as a unifying theme for the study of chemical physics. In this respect, this book is unique... The topics it tackles, while interest to many researchers in manifold fields, have never been distilled into a single volume. And this first effort deserves kudos.

Each chapter(there are 10 chapters in the whole book)is supported with an exhaustive list of references and is reasonably self contained. Moreover, there is an immediate sense of coherence and the topical flow is rather well laid out. However, it is not a textbook with all that it implies. Wales provides a updated (as of the time of his writing (2003)) account of various topics, but none of them are treated assuming a classroom style. However, the reader is referred to the pertinent literature with valuable remarks as to what is to be found in which particular reference. The proofs to the equations are largely avoided but their origin and the physical implications are given a fair treatment. The required
mathematical background to follow the text is rather modest, while the wide spectrum of topics covered curbs its potential as a real page turner for the novice.

The illustrations are abound and in color which is a definitive plus. The binding and the paper quality is first class. The typeface is Donald Knuth`s Computer Modern with 11/14pt letter size, and this genuinely alleviates the reading process. My only quibble is the uneven quality of the images permeating the text as some of them have been culled from different sources.

I think the book serves its purpose very well and it is a good introductory exposition to a subject with utmost importance in nanoscience. I highly recommend it to anyone whose work involves materials science, chemisty or physics.

Can't get enough

Wales must have cloned himself multiple times in order to have found time to have written such a comprehensive book. I'll leave the science for people smarter than I to judge, but I'm giving it 5 stars based on its visual impact alone. I just can't get enough of his beautifully created graphics of undulating potential energy surfaces and cluster rearangement pathways (to name but two examples). Wales is showing us the elegance of his chosen field- and in a way that's simple enough for us dullards to appreciate. I wonder if he's considered a second career in designing topologically interesting furniture, upholstered in only the finest convex polyhedra. This book will no doubt become required reading for those in the molecular simulation community and will be especially ideal for those starting out on their phd's.
Minor points: A cursory read has shown a few typographical errors, which should be corrected in future editions. I also found the references at the end of chapters a little unwieldy. It would also have been nice for Wales to have included a bibliography of recommended texts that could be used to take some of the ideas further.

About the Author
Deputy Chief Vincent Dunn (ret.) is safety consultant to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), reviewing and commenting on firefighter fatalities. He was an expert consultant with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) department, investigating the World Trade Center emergency response on September 11, 2001. Dunn writes the column Safety and Survival on the Fireground for Firehouse magazine; he is an adjunct Professor at John Jay College, City University of New York; and he taught fire protection design at the Manhattan College civil engineering department. He was one of the original developers of the National Fire Academy s course Command and Control of Fire Department Major Operations. Chief Dunn is a contributing editor for B Shifter e-magazine and Fire Engineering magazine. He is the author of four textbooks published by Fire Engineering Books and Videos: Safety and Survival on the Fireground (2nd edition, 2015); Collapse of Burning Buildings (2nd edition, 2010); Strategy of Firefighting (2007); and Command and Control of Fires and Emergencies (2000).During a 42-year career with the FDNY, he served 7 years as firefighter, 10 years as a company officer, and 25 years a fireground chief officer, attending college at night with the assistance of the G.I. Bill, receiving an AAS in fire administration, a BA in sociology, and an MA in urban studies from Queens College, City University of New York.

Excellent First book for Firefighters

I recommend this book to all of my new firefighters. Its clear, concise and challenges them to think about their new profession. It was loaned to me when I was still on probation my my officer and i am continuing the tradition.

Out of all the books I had to read for a promotion test this one was my favorite. A lot of good information. The only thing I did not like we're the last chapters. Those chapters was basically the whole book.

About the Author
Joseph Yiu joined ARM in 2001 and has been involved in a wide range of projects including development of ARM Cortex-M processors and various on-chip system level and debug components. In addition to in-depth knowledge of the processors and microcontroller system design, Joseph also has extensive knowledge in related areas including software development for the ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers, FPGA development and System-on-Chip design technologies.

Truly Definitive - Impressive Update

This is a monumental work. It covers everything from a high-level overview of the company (ARM) and how they do business (a fab-less IP company) to the low-level instructions offered by each of their microcontroller families (M0-M4).

I was wondering how different this update would be to the 2nd edition. It is not just a cursory update with references changed to include the M4 (although there is some of that). There is a large amount of new material, including the new floating point and DSP instructions available on the Cortex M4. Lot's of other new material has been included.

There is a great introduction about why ARM, and specifically the Cortex matter. It is *very* well-done and includes a huge set of diagrams.

There is a lot to like:

* Typeset well, clearly laid out

* Interesting background (ARM, processors, differences between families)

* Cortex M4 coverage

* Good overview diagrams (such as a single page diagram showing the M0, M0+, M1, M3, and M4 instruction differences).

* Breadth (high-level overviews, all the way down to very low-level processor details)

* Sample code (how to utilize certain instructions to build an OS, for example)

The code examples are especially surprising and welcome. A lot of effort was put into showing how certain features would be used: the SysTick timer, shadowed stack pointer, MPU, FPU, DSP, Sleep (WFE/WFI), etc. Actual C code is given (and explained), showing how to utilize each of these features (and others). C is used where possible, but mixed assembly is used where it makes sense. For example, on page 342 of the Context Switching example.

This is an impressive work. But is there any room for improvement? Of course there would be some small things, such as improving the grammar (such as when software code is repeatedly called "software codes"), reformatting some diagrams to fit better (p545-48, p551-58, 618, ...) are unnecessarily in landscape orientation, yet do not utilize the extra space), and some examples in the SIMD section. The M4 has a large number of SIMD and saturating instructions, most of them duplications because of operand size or such. It would be helpful to have an explanation of which ones to use when.

The index is good for reference and is almost too detailed. One issue is that the entry for CMSIS-RTOS gives only a single page (p48), with no mention to p607 section 19.1.3 "Role of CMSIS-RTOS".

Reviews of other editions have noted that there are a lot of references to Keil tools. Those references are still here in this update, but IAR is also mentioned in a couple of places. Although it does get old seeing "Keil" mentioned repeatedly, GCC is also covered at times. Very nice.

The breadth of this book is impressive. From the excellent new DSP coverage, to debugging support and techniques, to the Advanced Topics and Software Porting chapters, there is such a wealth of useful information that this 3rd edition feels more like a new book than just an update.

Very helpfull for me as an embedded systems programmer

I'm on my maiden voyage into the ARM world. I've got a project using an Atmel SAM4E microcontroller that sports a Cortex M4 inside. I thought this book would be better suited to the folks who are looking at incoporating the ARM IP into a microcontroller, but it was great for me too. My copy is full of highlights and notes -- good thing its digital!

According to Grudin (English, Univ. of Oregon), creativity is a radical act of freedom, a heroic process closely linked with beauty, integrity, power, and ethics. The author examines art, teaching, literature, philosophy, and related disciplines, looking at the process of innovation itself and using concise examples from the work of Plato, Rilke, F.L. Wright, etc. He argues that creative acts are not necessarily new but are most often the rediscovery of profound, ancient truths lost by societies in which liberals strive for the merely new and conservatives struggle to keep the status quo. A beautifully written book that is highly recommended.

I am glad I came across this writer

It is a must read for some artists. It supports those supposedly crazy detours and and quixotic pursuit of personal vision- no matter what the time frame. It is not for those who consider art as a "product", to please others or an engine of financial success or acclaim. Dale Carnegie, I suppose would be a better choice.

Mr Grudin alsos nudges us to confront sometimes painfully) those habits in our life and thinking that disable us from fully accessing our fullest potential.

"Origins and Practice of Innovation Through Creativity"

This book is a study of creativity in the social and ethical contexts, and of creativity as a result of innovation. It can also be used as a guide book for leading a life promoting innovation through creativity.
The book has three distinct but closely related parts: The Creative Mind, The Ethics of Creativity and The Politics of Innovation, explaining how the building blocks of creativity - inspiration, imagination, sense of beauty, integrity, persistence, vision and learning - all lead to innovation. While one could use this as a resource for inspiration and as a guidebook for practicing and promoting creativity in everyday life, the author makes no efforts to sell the book as such. Instead, he has opted for a conversational style that aids critical reading, and inspires further thinking. This helps to frequently stop and think about the material, and to inquire the logic. The language is very crisp and to the point. The editing is very sharp. One could read the book just for the anecdotes, both historic and the contemporary ones, which are plentiful in the book. The notes at the end is really an annotated bibliography, which can also be very useful.
This is a great antidote for the current day world where success is often wrongly equated with "fast", "immediate", "creating powerpoint slides", ... and the likes; where, the examination of things is becoming increasingly superficial, and the critical evaluations are frequently regarded as a hindrance to "productivity", and where the incompetence is frequently promoted for the resulting political expediencies. Dr Grudin explains why some people despise the concept of "working the system" to your advantage, and why they often take routes that look more elaborate and longer. He explains what is it that some people who get paid for forty-hours but seem to be always at work, are seeking and what drives them to voluntarily opt for such practices of hardwork and dedication. He explains why some people seem to take so much interest in every project around them, and seem to bounce back to success and happiness, from every failure they encounter. And, finally, he convinces us how creative work, even at the modest levels, can be the key to happiness.
By not casting its title with something like "N-practices of super-creative people" or something akin to that, and instead giving it the current title, and thus choosing honesty and class over marketing, Dr Grudin has put to practice what he preaches in the book. But if that makes you not consider this book, it's your loss!
A great baedeker for people and organizations wanting to promote creativity, and through creativity, innovation.

For the Creative Humanist

The topic sentence of this book is "We see human civilization as having risen to eminence among other species through political, scientific, and technological innnovation." This sets the tone for a humanistic course the the forms of creativity through history. For someone who comes from a technology background (read: geek), this book was an unexpected suprise. It gave a social context to the value system that the technologist depends on, and the legacy that supports the innovator of today.
I was inspired me over and over again. I kept on finding gems, and thinking "that's a creative way to get unstuck." For something that has so many references, it's balanced well with the discourse. I've got a reading list now, and a few biographies to read.
There was a spiritual quality to this book, grounded in history and human experience. In comes through in the sense of reflection, and the connection to great humanists through time.
A note of caution. The wordsmithing in this book is tight. While not a bad thing, that may lesson the appeal of this book for some. Also, the title doesn't exactly reasonate, since the theme of "grace" is never dealt with, and while Creativity is one of the great natures, it seems a stretch.
Had I not met the author in person, I would have never considered reading this book; Now, I wonder if it would be possible to take a class from him.
If you are looking for an exceptional find, this is one.

About the Author
Traudl Junge was born in Munich in 1920. From the end of 1942 until April 1945 she was Hitler’s private secretary. After the war she was sent to a Russian prison camp and later returned to Germany. She died on February 10, 2002, shortly after the publication of the German edition of her book.

The Fuhrer has two faces

I first saw Traudl Junge in an interview embedded in the movie "Downfall". She was an elderly woman who appeared to be struggling with guilt for her association with Hitler. She appeared very sincere and admitted that even though things were not discussed in depth in the Bunker and other residences she visited, she could have found out more about the death and destruction spearheaded by Hitler.

This 250 page paperback is a first hand account of Traudl Junge's association with the administration of the Third Reich as her job as secretary to Adolf Hitler. She was in her early 20's when she landed the job in Berlin in 1943. Germany was losing the war yet in her position she was sheltered from the world around her and by her account she was protected by Hitler; he seemed to be a father figure to her, very caring and interesting to talk to.

She writes of her time in the Reich's Chancellery, the Berghof, and the Bunker in East Prussia. She speaks of the many characters she came in contact with and how Hitler's personality garnered respect from all he commanded. She rarely saw Hitler's dark side; he was the consumate entertainer and host in his home, held lunches and dinner's for 25 people, and traveled to see heads of state, and she was part of the entourage.

She was not an ardent Nazi, did not come close to the horrid SS women of Ravensbruck Concentration Camp, she simply was there for the job but admittedly in awe of the Fuhrer. She liked the idea of a national community and everybody working together for a better Germany. She saw Hitler as a genial host on one hand and military supreme commander on the other and had a difficult time reconciling this dichotomy. she believed Hitler lived for his mission, for the idealogy of national socialism for a greater Germany. He always visited wounded soliders on his birthday. She said Hitler admitted prefering to "speak off the cuff", this fits with the writing of Mein Kampf which appears more as a speech than a liteary piece. The laws of nature were his religion. His oratory, she said held people spellbound suppressing their own convictions.

The last ten days in the bunker she describes vividly and offers a statement of Gunsche, the SS soldier who burnt the corpses of Hitler and Eva Braun. The "most powerful man in the Reich, and now ashes blowing in the wind." This book offers something few books do, actual quotes on a peronsal basis of people closest to Hitler and Hitler himself.

This is a sad story of a young woman who chose to be a follower of Hitler, a "young follower" as she was categorized. After 1945 and until the end of her life she was filled with guilt, but chose not to take the path taken by so many of suicide. She lived with the past and tried to make the future better for herself. Two and a half years of a life of German royalty had such a powerful impact on the rest of it. She was lucky she survived the Russian Camps. The book also contains 14 black and white photos and one authentic manuscipt page of her memoir. She offers a unique and honest perspective of Hitler, a man on a solitary path, whose inner core was never truly revealed, and who in the end succumbed to his own law of nature.

An observer of events...

A re-published memoir by one of Hitler's private secretaries (from the first meeting in November 1942 through the end in April 1945). "Traudl" Junge was born Gertraud Humps. Later, with Hitler's encouragement, she married one of his orderies, Hans H. Junge in June of 1943. Hans Junge was killed in action on August 13, 1944. Though it all she continued working at Hitler's side and looked on him as a father figure. The book shows her interaction with Hitler along with his private side. She is able to give thumb nail sketches of his inner circle, as well. Mrs. Junge was present in the F�hrerbunker and describes the events therein. She typed Hitler's last will and political testament. She also heard "the shot" in which Hitler ended his life.

The book is not meant to be a scholarly written book as to those times and events. It is interesting and gives the reader anecdotes and observations. The book is written mainly from the point of view of the (then) rather naive, non-political young woman who witnessed the decline and fall of both Hitler and Nazi Germany. A main source for the movie "Downfall".

Footnote: Much of the information put forth in the book above was covered by Mrs. Junge in her contributions to: "Voices From the Bunker" by Pierre Galante. However, "Voices From the Bunker" was not quite as detailed overall and further did not include pre-Hitler and post-Hitler information as to Mrs. Junge's life.

Vivid Description of the "Banality of Evil"

Hannah Arendt, while observing Adolf Eichmann during his trial for Nazi war crimes, was struck by how very ordinary and unsinister he appeared. This led to her calling him the embodiment of the "banality of evil", disputing the idea that most Nazis were sociopaths and very different from ordinary human beings.

This book is a narrative illustrating that concept. Traudl Junge goes to work as a secretary for Hitler, not because of any burning ideological reasons, but simply because she wants to leave a job she dislikes. She wants to leave to become a dancer, but state regulations at the time require she do something that helps the state. Through a colleague related to Albert Bormann, she is invited to apply for the position of secretary for Hitler and is chosen from among several young women.

Here is where the story becomes absolutely fascinating and this is why: Junge wrote her account in 1947, only 2 years after the end of the war. While Hitler already was seen as an evil man by the Allies, the full extent of what had happened was just beginning to be known. So Junge has the freedom to simply detail her daily life with Hitler, unencumbered by the weighty responsibility she might have felt later on to villify him.

And so we see a Hitler who loves his German Shepherd,Blondi, and jokes with Eva Braun about how her two Scotch terriers are "nothing but a couple of dusting brushes"....a man who awkwardly tells young Traudl she should come to him if any of the young soldiers ever harass her... an wonderful conversationalist who loves to retell pranks he did as a young man....a father figure to Junge who made her feel protected. All in all, her experience was such that she decades later says, "I can still look back to that time with warm emotions. I never again felt that I belonged anywhere in just the same way."

This book also details the failed assassination attempt on Hitler, Junge's impressions of several prominent Nazis, and Hitler's last days in the Berlin bunker. Interestingly, she also alludes to different ways those around Hitler were affected by his charisma and drawn in to following him unquestioningly. The book ends by heartbreakingly describing Junge's later agony as she realizes truly what she had been a part of, enduring long bouts of depression which led to hospitalizations and psychotherapy as she struggled to overcome her guilt and shame.

How can we wrap our minds around the fact that a human who commit horrific atrocities can also love animals and exhibit tender kindness towards others? I don't have any answers, but while we cannot and should not forget the evil perpetrated by Hitler, if we value truth, we must also not turn him into simply a personification of evil, with no admirable qualities. Junge's story is a witness to that paradoxical truth. Highly recommended.
