About the Author
Charles W. L. Hill is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of Business at the University of Washington Business School in Seattle. His research interests focus on competition and competitive analysis, corporate strategy, international business, organizational structure, and corporate governance. Dr. Hill has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and has served on the editorial boards of several top tier journals, including the Academy of Management Review and the Strategic Management Journal. He also is the author of a successful international business textbook. An active consultant, Dr. Hill has worked with numerous companies. He has worked with Microsoft for almost 20 years and continues to be active within that organization. He received his PhD from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Gareth R. Jones received his PhD from the University Of Lancaster, England, and he is trained in Economics and Organizational Theory and Behavior. His research interests include organizational design for performance, the evolution of business, and corporate-level strategy. Dr. Jones has published articles in all the major management journals and is co-author of several textbooks.

Excellent Book for All Leaders

Having this be a required book in a recent doctoral course on leadership, I was plesantly surprised by the content. This book should be required reading for all who are interested in strategic management, organizational change, and the future of business and industry. The examples are right-on, useful, and very meaningful. Anyone interested in environmental and internal scanning for an organization can use the simple model provided in the book. I would say this is one of the best books I have ever read on this subject.

Brief and to the Point

Business executives, like many professionals, are wary of all the garbage that poses as valid information. They need to cut through the noise to get the real meat, and they don't have a lot of time to wade through extraneous space-filling material that does not contribute to what they need to know.

The authors get right into content. They concisely but comprehensively, step-by-step, explain the strategic management process and techniques. No wasted time here. While based on rigorous research, the writing is succinct and thus making it a useful book for the busy executive who needs a comprehensive, useful and practical textbook to guide him/her in strategic decision making. It's a good business approach.

The raw and abridged Stephanie Plum

Just in case you fall under category 3, I'll make this quick.

Main character:

Rona Shively, Private Detective, 38 years old, petite, single and available, did time, domestically challenged, foul-mouthed, drives ugly car and has no aversion to alcohol or fast food.

Assignment:

Locate missing person

Possible problems:

a. Missing person's uncle is a crime boss
b. Missing person has undergone significant lifestyle changes
c. People are starting to get killed
d. Effeminate neighbor is getting too close for comfort
e. Nothing appears to be as it seems

Humor, mystery and murder combine here in an all-too-short but thoroughly enjoying read, and I'm really looking forward to the next Rona Shively Story.

Life is Full of Surprises

Rona Shively's life IS full of surprises. As a private investigator, she finds herself in more trouble than she bargained for when she takes on a missing person's case: looking for an ex-wife who has changed her lifestyle drastically. As though that didn't present enough trouble, Rona escapes murder by a thread until it finally surprises her 'In The Wash'--room that is. During all the difficulties, Rona is faced with a chance to love and be loved, but will her tendency not to trust anyone keep her from this very aspect of life a woman desires so badly? I liked Rona Shively because she's so down-to-earth. She's tough, but underneath that toughness lies a tender heart. The story is good, the plotting great. Rebecca Benston draws you into the story from the first page. Read the book. It's a delightful, but short, mystery.

My review's not as enthusiastic as those proceeding me

In the Wash is a mystery, the first in a series for which the sleuthing protagonist is Rona Shively. Rona is an interesting character whom Benston describes as "feisty, fearless and fabulous."

Here comes the short summary: Rona Shively has already been a detective for some time when this book begins. She is thirty-eight years old, has problems with her personal relationships, and in the case which this book recounts, has problems with her professional life, as well. She is hired to find a person named Luther Janetti, who has lived an interesting life. While on this search, Rona catches the attention of her annoying neighbor, hears conflicting stories concerning her client, and finds herself in mortal danger.

Now, on to the pros and cons of this book...

For one thing, Benston knows how to put a sentence together adequately. It is not hard to read her writing. This mystery is a short, light read. This is the sort of story a person might want to bring along on a trip to the beach.

Another factor is the plot. Obviously, I can't give too much detail, particularly as this book is rather short, but the plot is kind of crazy. The first three chapters immediately convey the fact that Benston is not an author to write about the mundane. Even the description of the person Rona is hired to find causes the reader to raise his or her eyebrows and say, "Ooh...I need to know more!"

Unfortunately, the read is not as engaging as the first three chapters led me to believe. To be fair, this is the first book in the series, and Benston's writing might get smoother in her later books. With regards to this first book, however, I felt that it was a bit under-developed.

The plot is interesting, but the conclusion felt too hasty. The book was wrapped up too quickly. Really, the entire book feels like it should have been fleshed out a little more. There are quite a number of characters introduced, but I didn't often feel like I comprehended their personality. And at times, the manner in which the action occurred felt a bit mechanical.

However, Benston's subject matter in this first book was intriguing. She seems to be an author who has really interesting ideas. Also, In the Wash is a quick read, which is often desirable.

She has taught ESL students at Georgia Tech, international teaching assistants at Emory University, and graduate students in applied linguistics at Georgia State University in Atlanta. The book is good but useless without audio CD

This book is very good. However, this paperback version is associated with 4 audio CDs. The book without CDs is useless. So, bear in mind that you will pay extra $35 for the audio CDs unless you can get them another way.

I received the CDs and they are working fine. However, CD 4 is kind of bad. It took longer time for me to copy it.

Best book on pronunciation ever.

I am lucky enough to have studied phonetics and phonology under this wonderful woman, and feel that she is quite possibly one of the few in the field with this level of expertise. Aside from having an incredibly warm personality, she is an absolute expert on English pronunciation, from segmentals to suprasegmentals. I feel that any ESL classroom or any ESL student struggling with "sounding native" or who wishes to reduce their accent would benefit greatly from this book. There is a lot of emphasis on intonation and sentence patterns, and they are presented in an easy to learn fashion without making the reader feel stupid.

About the Author
Brian Friel was born in Omagh, County Tyrone (Northern Ireland) in 1929. He received his college education in Derry, Maynooth and Belfast and taught at various schools in and around Derry from 1950 to 1960. He is the author of many plays that have taken their place in the canon of Irish Literature, including Philadelphia, Here I Come! (1964), Lovers (1967), Translations (1980), The Communication Cord (1982), and Dancing at Lughnasa (1990). In 1980 he founded the touring theatre company, Field Day, with Stephen Rea.

Brian Friel; the Shakespeare of the modern day.

"Philadelphia, Here I Come!" was Friel's first huge American hit and since then his other works have been awarded and performed all over North america. Most of Friel's plays take place near or around the fictional town of Balleybeg in Northern Ireland. this particular plkay is about a youbngman who is leaving the family and it;s business tomorrow to travel to America and join relatives in Philadelphia. His character is played by two actors, p0one who plays the man who speaksout loud and one who speaks his toughts and only to him. TYhis is a method of theatre that is sheer genuis and through it we are able to recognize the sort of interior conlicts we have with oiuselves. the story line is very moving while there are times with side splitting comdey.

Brian Friel is highly celebrated. his play "Dancing At Lughnasa" won all of the awards in the UK, moved to Broadway and won all of the words there. It transferred beautifullt to film with an all Irish cast with the exception of Meryl Streep= the only dialect actress whose performance is just as good in German as it is in English. His play "Faith Healer" is a completely different format but just as powerful and moving. Wkith "Philadelphia, Here I Come", we open the first page or enter the theatre and because of the title we ar expecting a particular sort of play- perhapos one of Lewis and Martin's "Road to' styles but we open to gray and dim Balleybeg and we are soon so very captivated that though the premise is intelligent (think of "The Newsroom", "Sports Night", or "Social Network" and there you have it.)

If you;re one who enjoys reading plays, this is one not to miss. It's not an acotrs edition, it;s designed for reading.

For those who don;t know, when creating a script for actors gthere should be as few stage or line directions as possible so that the actors can make choices on her own. Scripts printed for the public require stage directions for those peiple who have a hard time designing a set, light plot costumes and properties list as they read. This is the difference between an actors edition (usually published by Damuel French) and the pficial published version. This version is the latter.

I will not include any spikersm but will say that Friel has a remarkable talent for diualouge and character- they are remarkably believable- and he can take a single emotion of character flaw and develop it into a full evening of self discovery.

The Philadelphia in this play is not the Philadelphia of today. It represents new beginings- the city where broadway musicals tried out and Eugene Ormandy conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra. The state of New Jersey had not yet pulled the plug on Canden just over the Franklin Bridge so crime and druigs didn;t creep across during the night in the ghuise of gangs.

If David Crosby can call Bob Dylan the Shakespeare of song writers then i can certainly calkl Brian Friel toady''s stage Shakespeare. He is even better than Aaron Sorkin, for those of you who know television or film; Fril is the shakespeare of Mozart for those of you who are comfortable with art music. Ani DiFranco for indie music, Paul Simon for pop music and willy Wonka or Choclate.

Think it's with it? It is.

Of course this was Brian Friel's first big success. It should have been. It's about the mysteries of immigration, the loss of what's left behind, the hope of what's hoped and longed for, the inability to feel what you say and to say what you feel, love lost and given away, and how we are not what we seem, or even what we think we are. It's also about not really understanding all this and still doing something. And it's funny.
