Native Foreigners: Jewish-Polish Poetry Between the World Wars, by Aniela Gregorek, Jerzy Gregorek

Poetry. Jewish Studies. Selected and translated from the Polish by Aniela and Jerzy Gregorek. "In their preface to this anthology, translators Aniela and Jerzy Gregorek say that they hope we will experience what they themselves did when they encountered these poems in the original Polish. Surely, they can rest easy. Reading the fourteen heartsongs of NATIVE FOREIGNERS, you will be struck, as I've been, almost to silence by their depth of symbolic memory, by their intimacy, by the various diasporic losses these poet exiles had to endure—we do not even have birth—&/or death-dates for several of them. Their lyrics, however stark, however sad and filled with regret, were their consolation. Accompanied, now, by evocative drawings done by a genius, the poets are at last safe, will remain immortal within us as we read them."—William Heyen, Author, SHOAH TRAIN (Etruscan Press, 2003), National Book Award finalist

Review
Wladyslaw Szlengel said this about his work: I was supposed to read these poems, these documents, to human beings who believed they would survive . . . but comrades to my wanderings disappeared and the poems became in one hour the poems which I read to the dead. This is the context in which the poems presented in Aniela and Jerzy Gregorek's Native Foreigners: Polish-Jewish Poetry Between the World Wars were rescued and brilliantly translated from the original Polish. Among the fourteen poems presented here, the fiercely precise Nothing New (Nihil Novi) by Szlengel is especially moving, as are the powerful, pre-Holocaust meditation Generation (Pokolenie) by Perec Nowomiast; Mieczyslaw Braun's darkly wrought jewel, Refugees& (Uchodzcy); the beautiful short poem Sabbath (Sobota) by Maurycy Szymel; and the haunting concluding poem, Heinrich Heine, by Juliusz Wit. Lines like Nowomiast's our childhood vanished years ago / the whole world ashed, grayed, and faded still resonate today. Riches like these, and Jerzy Feiner's black-and-white illustrations, are gifts from a tormented Jewish past, that was, all-at-once, steeped in the history of a survivor people, torn by conflicting allegiances, robustly creative, and moving inevitably toward modernity and cataclysm. --Charles Fishman Editor, Blood to Remember: American Poets on the Holocaust (2007) Author, In the Path of Lightning: Selected Poems (2012) --In Praise of Native Foreigners Section

In the finest tradition of Cross-Cultural Communications, a truly unique and beautifully designed little volume provides a first and inimitable good hard look into a vast cultural realm that you might otherwise never know existed. This book is an anthology of an anthology: a collection of five hundred poems written by Jewish authors in the Polish language between the two world wars, further sharply anthologized down to poems, provided here in their entirety, in the original Polish with facing English translation. This was the springtime of a country that had been wholly wiped off the map by the larger powers in the late eighteenth century, came back after World War I to win a massive territory and establish the new Polish Republic that everyone thought would last for many centuries. Various of its minority culture thrived like never before. But it was itself to be divided again by larger neighbors in 1939, and the Nazis would murder close to the entirety of its Jewish minority, which numbered over three million in the interwar years. At least within those circles interested in Yiddish literature and culture, the Polish Yiddish literary center has been immortalized by the writings of Isaac Bashevis Singer, Joseph Opatoshu, Sholem Ash, and many other Yiddish writers. Less well known are the Hebrew language authors. This book is dedicated to Jewish poets who wrote in neither Jewish language of literary currency, but in the Polish language, and are largely, and sadly, forgotten by Jews and Poles alike. By the very act of choosing Polish for their poetry, though I dare say Yiddish was their first language, they were making the conscious and public choice of joining the mainstream culture in a major patriotic dedication of their poetic talent and their years. Ipso facto, by way of their choice of language, these Jewish poets are not only making a patriotic statement of self-inclusion in the majority culture. They are also speaking not so much to fellow Jews as to the general Polish Poland, and in a deeper sense, to the new Europe in the making. That discourse includes frank and open dealing with the country s (and Europe s) illness known as antisemitism, and it is to this book s great credit that this too is on the poetic table along with all the other topics, not peering down from a curtain of retrospective correctness. This book brings to the English reader an enchanting chapter of Polish Jewish culture that we barely knew existed. Cross-Cultural Communications Press has again broken the barrier of our flat mass media culture to seek out a beautiful and unknown literature. --Dovid Katz Author: Words on Fire: The Unfinished Story of Yiddish Editor: online blog DefendingHistory --In Praise of Native Foreigners Section

Review
2015 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist (LGBT Category)
2014 INDIEFAB Book of the Year Finalist
"One of the 10 Best Indie YA Novels of 2014"- Foreword Reviews

"A Boy Like Me is a big-hearted novel narrated by an unforgettable character: Peyton, a boy trapped in the body of a girl. As he navigates his complicated coming-of-age, Peyton's powerhouse voice - funny, sad and charming, riding edges of both humor and pathos - renders his experience universal. I cheered Peyton on even as I cringed at some of his understandable missteps; continued rooting for him through the book's sweet surprise of an ending; and carry him with me now as I do anyone, real or imagined, who touches my soul." - Lisa Borders, author of The Fifty-First State and Cloud Cuckoo Land

"Tara and Peyton's story progresses like a classic forbidden-love romance. A reader would be hard-pressed to not care about these characters by the end of the book. The book is ultimately realistic without being utterly bleak, smart without going over the heads of a YA audience, and impactful without being moralistic, or extending the meaning of Peyton's individual life too far beyond him to somehow stand in for "all" trans youth."- Mitch Kellaway,Lambda Literary

"This story of a trans boy falling in love with a girl in high school is delightful and heartwarming in all the right places. Wood perfectly captures the intensity and immediacy of adolescent ups and downs." - Emerson M. Fuller, Foreword Reviews

"A classic love story!Wood gets all the details of a trans individual coming-of-age into this novel. From the feelings about clothes, to the relationships with parents to the negotiations of life at school, this story rings true.Wood takes care with her setting and makes life, as painful and joyful as it can be, realistic. This novel is a great examination of what it means to come to terms with who you are and what it means to be true to yourself." - Alex Myers, author ofRevolutionary

Didn't want to put it down! Emotional roller coaster
By Elizabeth A. Delaney
It is a rare occurrence for me to pick up a book and not want to put it down. I was never that way with any of the Harry Potters or even my favorite mysteries. I tend to find a comfort zone of reading 20-35 pages in a sitting and don't read every day. But those precious times when a book flows so incredibly well from chapter to chapter, I've managed to read a whole novel in only a couple of days. This was the experience I had reading my friend Jennie Wood's first YA novel, A BOY LIKE ME.

If you're interested in the writing process, Jennie has been on my podcast, Vodka O'Clock, to talk about what it was like for her to create the book. We explored as much as possible from the cover design to how delicately she handled the story of a transgendered protagonist when she herself isn't.

A BOY LIKE ME comes in around 300 pages and covers the teen years of Katherine "Peyton" Honeycutt. Throughout most of the novel, Peyton is unaware of his gender identity and struggles every day feeling like there's something wrong with his female body. The book boldly starts off with an 8th grade girl getting her first period at school while wearing a dress and fancy shoes her mother insisted on. She meets a new girl at school, Tara Parks, who convinces her to swap outfits for the day. Tara's body confidence and go-getter personality were as foreign to Katherine as her own female body felt. This is where the young romance story begins. It's Tara who gives Katherine the new name Peyton and I actually don't think there's ever an instance where Tara needs to choose either "he" or "she"; I'm pretty sure I only remember Tara saying "Peyton," "you," "we" or "us."

The reason Peyton's life is relatable as a character even for a reader who is cisgendered, is that so many people of any gender go through times hating their bodies and feeling that deep desire to be someone else. There's a seed in our guts that gets planted somewhere along the way as we grow up that germinates into a hologram making us believe we would only be happy if... if we could have that other person's life. It's not a trans-exclusive struggle but their inability to disguise their misidentified bodies is uniquely theirs and something cis- people should learn about to gain a bit of understanding.

Jennie puts Peyton through a series of obstacles as the character moves through high school. He's athletic but gets placed on the girls' teams. He changes for gym class in a stall instead of the locker area where all the girls are comfortable in front of each other. He moves through this life with a religiously misguided and oppressive mother who lays all excuses for her failures on Peyton's father leaving them. Luckily, readers get the reprieve on their hearts every time Peyton's fantastic Uncle RB is around; he is the best father figure possible and completely supportive without prying about what Peyton is going through. It's sort of a situation where certain people know Peyton is a male identity long before he does. The emotional roller coaster had me crying plenty of times. The love from Uncle RB was one thing but Peyton's relationship with Tara was constantly a battle until Peyton found his real self. The very real misconception many of the characters have towards Peyton is that "she's" a lesbian even though the word makes no sense to him since he feels like a boy in love with a girl. Even though Uncle RB is awesome about the whole thing, there are townsfolk and classmates who make it their mission to torment Tara and Peyton for being freaks and dykes.

What I liked about the writing style is that this is a story about regular people in a small town and Jennie Wood makes everyday moments into full chapters. It's a way of writing I'm not used to anymore. I think it's because so much of my reading material is unrealistic: funny murder mysteries, gruesome action-packed adventures, or characters with special powers. Sure, you can take super-powered characters and craft a very human story (as is prominently done in things like X-MEN) but it's never one hundred percent relatable. Spider-Man's Peter Parker might be considered one of the most "everyday" characters in comics, yet, he's a science genius in one of the largest cities in America. I can't relate to Peter Parker all that much. A scene of Spider-Man is not going to be like a scene from my life but a scene in A BOY LIKE ME easily can be. We have dive bars where bands play and that's pretty much the only thing to do if you aren't at a high school sports event. I haven't wanted to watch that since I was in the high school marching band so, no thanks, I'll stay home on Friday night. Otherwise, it's boring small town life with a movie theatre several miles away and shopping malls.

If you are willing to take on the emotions, I can't recommend A BOY LIKE ME highly enough. I read it in 2 days. I found myself wanting to finish whatever I was working on so I could get back to it as quickly as possible. Hopefully, anyone who reads my reviews understands that the Young Adult label is not a restriction on who would enjoy the book. It's more like a guide letting you know the main characters are young and that it's likely not appropriate for a 10 year old or younger. You should like what you like and don't let any loud mouth columnists make you feel bad for enjoying a YA book.

Peyton stuck with me long after I finished reading his story.
By Kelly Robertson
Peyton Honeycutt, the protagonist of A Boy Like Me, is an unforgettable character. Peyton is a boy trapped in a girl’s body and is so expertly drawn that I felt the awkwardness, pain, and joy that is part of everyone’s adolescence. By getting to know Peyton, I have a new empathy for all transgendered people and what they must go through on a day-to-day basis. I was totally drawn into Peyton and Tara’s world, rooting for Peyton to get his girl and cheering on Tara for always being there for Peyton. A Boy Like Me should be read by anyone struggling with gender identity issues. A mark of a good book for me is how I think about the book after I’ve finished it. Peyton stayed in my thoughts for weeks afterward, and I thank Jennie Wood for writing Peyton’s story.

I started reading a Boy Like Me on Saturday. Once I started, I could not put it down and wound up staying in until I finished even though I really did not want the book to end. The characters in the book were so well developed, I felt I knew them personally and became vested in their story. I laughed and cried many times while reading. I always know I love a book when I continue to think about the story a week or so after I finish reading. The story was touching and memorable. I think everyone has experienced times while growing up where they felt different or awkward and can empathize with Peyton's struggles. The story was a good reminder to embrace and cherish what makes each of us unique. I highly recommend this book.

"For aspirants of the highest beatitude, the Yoga Vasistha is like nectar. It is a storehouse of wisdom."-- Swami Muktananda

This is Swami Venkatesananda's longer Yoga Vasistha. His two volume book is here offered between two covers. Its purpose is to provide a means to eliminate psychological conditioning and to attain liberation. Containing the instructions of the sage Vasistha to Lord Rama, this scripture is full of intricately woven tales, the kind a great teacher might tell to hold the interest of a student.

Greatest spiritual work i've ever read
By Timothy Conway
Can one give a book "Infinite ********** Stars"?

When i first got to read Swami Venkatesananda's marvellous complete translation of the Yoga Vasistha nearly 30 years ago, I was amazed at what is surely the "greatest spiritual work" ever composed--a remarkable scripture of the most sublime nondual (advaita) profundity, rich stories ranging from the poignant to the psychedelic, and a warm, witty humor. Every page contains "quotable quotes" of such pithiness as to make you want to have them tatooed onto your skin. Yes, if there were a book i'd want to have with me if ever "stranded on a desert isle," this would be it (along with my mentor Sri Nisargadatta's *I AM THAT* collection of conversations, one of the Sri Ramana Maharshi collections--e.g., Talks or The Gospel of Sri Ramana Maharshi, the 100,000 Songs of Milarepa, and maybe one of the Ch'an/Zen collections, some Meister Eckhart German sermons, some Lao Tzu, and maybe one of the nondual Sufi shaikhs' teachings). I've gone through over 2,000 works on our classic sacred mystical traditions (East & West, including all the great Advaita classics), and, truly, Yoga Vasistha is a cut above all of them. Tripura Rahasya is about the only one that comes close, due to its inclusion of some wonderful stories.

The original 2-volume English translation by Swami Venkatesananda (a disciple of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh), issued in 1976 by the Chiltern Yoga Trust (only 3,000 copies printed!) has, with this single-volume 1993 SUNY publication, become indispensable for anyone interested in authentic nondual spiritual realization or, in general, Hindu studies or study of world religions.

No one knows quite when to date the Yoga Vasistha. Because, like most ancient religious texts, it was composed in layers, we have to speak of when an earliest core might have emerged and when a more-or-less final edition might have been composed. For the former, circa 5th-6th century is likely a good ballpark figure (see the work of Indian scholar B.L. Atreya). For the latter, T.G. Mainkar's date of around 1150 to 1250 is a good guestimate. Most scholars seem fairly sure it was composed in Kashmir, and that its mid- and late-stage versions are, among other things, a response to Buddhism (Kashmir had been a stronghold for Mahayana Buddhism before then).

Anyway, beyond the ultimately pointless scholarly details, one need only dive in and start reading on almost any page to get a sufficiently potent blast of nondual truth to utterly dissolve the illusion of there being any separate solid self or distinct, solid objects. All that's left is Consciousness (Pure Awareness) Alone, absolutely Full (of Being-Awareness-Bliss-Light-Love), utterly Empty/Open (not a speck of "anything" to be found), completely transcendent and vividly all-pervading.

The Yoga Vasistha, with its teaching of Ajatavada / Mayavada (no ultimately real, solid world exists), combined with such tales as that of various enlightened queens and kings, can produce the consummate spiritual balance in the reader of being fully *uninvolved* (transcendent) while being completely *involved* (immanent), lucidly dreaming this grand dream of life.

All praise to the Divine Dreamer!

Om Tat Sat!

Words Convey the State
By A Customer
Very few books actually give one the sense of the transcendent reality like this one does. Often words point you in the direction but leave the actual experience untasted. The way the words are arranged in this book of stories you can almost sense what enlightenment is. Highly recommended to help us realize we are not the body mind complex but the Eternal One residing in the Heart. As far as words can take you this book does take one into the state. There are 2 versions of this book. One is the Concise version. The longer version is quite lengthy and the themes of the stories are repeated. Sometimes the words are flowery and bog down the pace. The Concise version eliminates much repitition in the themes but the price is not much different between the two. The larger book is definitely not a quick read especially if you have limited time and are reading other books at the same time, 725 pages. But the larger book will have more stories that you can read later whereas you might finish the Concise version,(400+ pages),early and still want more...One of the best books conveying the reality of Brahman.

A treasure of knowledge
By Shanmugam Rajasekaran
Its amazing how contemporary this book feels, despite its age. The translation is elegant and a joy to read. Though the author says, "it's wise to read just one page a day", it is almost impossible to put the book down.

ABs who like a strong dash of Femdom and forced age play will enjoy this tale
By Daymareog
This is a Chlorobaby story by the way it is written and the use of the name "PJ". Also, the trademark "tissues" in the diaper is present. I will admit that while I did enjoy this story, it ended rather abruptly and wasn't as long as some of his works on Dailydiapers. I would have rated it a five if it was just a chapter longer and there was an ending like "PJ wasn't enjoying his captivity as an adult baby, but as the days turned to weeks he began to enjoy the life he was now forced to live thanks to the drug that was administered daily". Something like that, while simplistic, would have been better then how the story ended. Bare in mind I am a fan of this work and his previous works so this review is merely written in a "critique". I would highly recommend this story to any ABs who like a strong dash of Femdom and forced age play with their dose of diapers.
