Bullies: A Friendship, by Alex Abramovich

The powerful account of one writer's unlikely friendship with his childhood bully, now the president of a motorcycle club in one of America's most dangerous cities.

Once upon a time, Alex Abramovich and Trevor Latham were mortal enemies: miniature outlaws in a Long Island elementary school, perpetually at each other's throats. Then they lost track of each other. Decades later, when they met again, Abramovich was a writer and Latham had become President of the East Bay Rats, a motorcycle club in Oakland.

In 2010, Abramovich moved to California to immerse himself in Latham's world - one of fight clubs, booze-filled nights, and beat-downs on the city's streets. But dangerous, dysfunctional Oakland was also becoming one of America's most rapidly gentrifying cities, and the questions Abramovich had arrived with were thrown into brutal relief: How do we live with the burden of violence? How do we overcome it? Do we overcome it?

As Trevor, the Rats, and the city they live in careen between crises and moments of renaissance, Abramovich explores issues of friendship, family, history, and destiny - and looks at what happens when those things fail. Bullies is at once a vivid, visceral narrative of an unusual friendship and an incisive portrait of a beautiful, terrible city.

From School Library Journal
Abramovich is a journalist who grew up on Long Island. In the early 1980s, when he was in fourth grade, he was bullied by a boy named Trevor Latham. In 2006, Abramovich happened to learn that Latham had become a bouncer and had started a motorcycle club, the East Bay Rats, in Oakland. Intrigued, Abramovich pitched the story of Latham and the Rats to GQ and headed for Oakland to meet Latham for the first time in more than 20 years. Ultimately, Abramovich moved there for several years and wrote this book, which isn't so much about Latham or bullying as it is about Oakland, the motorcycle club culture, masculinity, violence, and the meaning of family and friendship. The story is brutal at times—the Rats sponsored regular "fight nights" and lived in a part of town where crimes were many and police were few—but also funny, touching, and occasionally ludicrous. The Rats referred to Abramovich as their "embedded" journalist, and while he resisted the phrase, he certainly got to know them and their community, which was, in fact, at times very much like a war zone. VERDICT Urban teens in particular may find much to connect with in this gritty tale of a changing city and some of the men who struggled to find a place in it.—Sarah Flowers, formerly with Santa Clara County (CA) Library

Review

"Bullies begins with bikers and beat-downs, but quickly becomes something bigger: a portrait of a group of men, in America's most radical city, that is at once honest, soulful, original, brutal, and just plain beautiful."
―Jonathan Mahler, author of Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning

"Alex Abramovich's Bullies, a great book about the prickly subject of masculinity, is also a woozy parable about America today. Which is to say that it's about coming to terms with flaws and failures and watching as the ground―Oakland, in this case―shifts under your feet. It's clear-eyed, unlyrically lyrical, and never shies from the truth."
―Luc Sante, author of Low Life

“Alex Abramovich is a true original and his first book, Bullies, is the real deal: A brutal, hilarious, deeply provocative look at our twisted American moment.”
―Sam Lipsyte, author of The Ask

“A sharp-eyed, fearlessly reported tale of personal and institutional violence.”
―Jenny Offill, author of Dept. of Speculation

“A punchy piece of reporting with a wicked hook.”
―New York Times Book Review

“Haunting.”
―San Francisco Chronicle

“A terrific book: fast and furious.”
―The Boston Globe

"Bullies is many things at once...in format, Bullies feels to me...like a series of linked vignettes, in the mold of Joan Didion’s “The White Album”...what the book makes clear is that violence begets violence: Just as Abramovich and Latham were products of broken, unhappy childhoods, the East Bay Rats, in their embrace of systematic violence, are the product of a place where systematic violence has long been a way of life."
―Vogue

“Abramovich’s narrative persona is artfully restrained.... He has in common with Geoff Dyer ― another writer expert at mixing memoir, history, reportage, and cultural criticism ― an impeccable instinct for his best material."
―New York Magazine

"Thought-provoking and fearless, Bullies offers sharp insight into violence, masculinity, and the history and future of one of America’s most dangerous cities."
―Buzzfeed, The 27 Most Exciting New Books Of 2016

"A tragicomic exploration of male violence and bonding...Abramovich’s sharp-eyed, entertaining reportage unfolds like a mash-up of The Wild One, Fight Club, and Jackass; his examination of the Rats’ worldview is sympathetic and nuanced, but squarely faces the group’s dysfunctions and the troubling questions they raise about American society."
―Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Thoughtful and engaging...A sharp, provocative memoir of an unlikely friendship."
―Kirkus Review

“This essential memoir... could have been twice as long and remained as fascinating.”
―Library Journal

“Alex Abramovich's Bullies: A Friendship begins as memoir but ends as witness testimony to an era in American history…Bullies is the story of two men's journey to put the demons of their childhood to rest. Along the way, it also manages to become a portrait of a city and a country locked in a struggle with some of those same demons."
―Chicago Tribune

A Cautionary Tale
By Sam Sattler
Bullies represents itself to potential readers as an "account of one writer's unlikely friendship with his childhood bully," a premise likely to appeal to readers who as children experienced either side of the bullying equation. And for a rather brief few pages that is what it is - but all too quickly, the book changes into a social history of the city of Oakland, California, combined with the history of motorcycle clubs in that part of the state. Interesting as those topics may be, I suspect that many readers will be disappointed that so little time is devoted to the psychology of bullies and their victims.

Alex Abramovich and Trevor Latham first met in the mid-eighties inside a fourth grade classroom in Long Island, New York, but Alex was a year younger than Trevor, the boy who would become his "mortal enemy." The boys had a lot in common, mainly that formerly athletic fathers who had once raced motorcycles were raising both of them in single-parent households. Despite their similarities, the boys spent much of the next three years fighting, kicking, and clawing at each other. Trevor's impact on Alex's life was so great that by the end of the fourth grade Alex was playing hooky, and by the end of the fifth grade he was failing most of his classes. At the end of the sixth grade, Alex's father moved him from the area, but it was too late. The damage was already done, and five years after the relocation, Alex would drop out of high school.

Despite the miserable three years they shared, Alex did not think about Trevor again until the day he stumbled upon an Internet reference to him indicating that Trevor had moved to the West Coast where he "started a motorcycle club." Alex, intrigued by the possibility of contacting his childhood bully, sensed from the start that their story was one that he wanted to tell. Surprisingly, when Alex and Trevor would finally sit down together in California, Trevor's memory for details from their childhood easily surpasses Alex's recall of those days. Trevor even remarks that he had considered himself the one who was being bullied, not that he was doing the bullying.

What began as a catch-up visit between Alex and Trevor would turn out to be much more than that when, in 2010, Alex moved to California to immerse himself into Trevor's violent lifestyle of excessive and constant boozing, street fighting, scheduled fight club events, and so much petty crime that the Oakland Police Department was largely forced to ignore it. As an honorary member of Trevor’s motorcycle club, Alex experienced all the ups and downs of that violent lifestyle right alongside his old nemesis (including firsthand experience with the Occupy Oakland movement that plagued that city) but the two of them never took the time to figure out what had happened to them as children.

And that is a shame because it is what I wanted most to learn about from reading Bullies. That said, those seeking an inside look into the rogue motorcycle club lifestyle are sure to enjoy and appreciate the book.

Not a Heartwarming Song of Closure
By No Reason
Read this book. Be warned, it is not a self-help book on overcoming childhood trauma. It is a nonfiction account of what happens when the author (Abramovich) reconnects with his childhood nemesis (Trevor), who daily tormented him in elementary school. In smooth, well-written prose Abramovich reports what he finds when he flies from New York to Oakland. Trevor works as a bouncer in a bar -- no surprise there -- but Abramovich is surprised when Trevor immediately accepts him as an old friend. Their childhood fighting is no impediment to friendship, rather it is the basis for camaraderie. Abramovich is invited into Trevor's world of bikers, booze, and belligerence, where "conversations could take sudden turns toward the freakish, or flat-out insane."

The book goes on to explain what happens when the chaotic meets the bizarre. With brief historical digressions, Abramovich describes the City of Oakland, some of the challenges it has overcome, and some that it still faces. Abramovich aptly describes present day Oakland as dysfunctional. Trevor seems quite at home. He accepts Oakland's dysfunction as canvas for his own expression. Trevor does not judge a situation as right-or-wrong, he just lives with it, as Abramovich illustrates when he notes that Trevor's common practice is to answer disjunctive questions with an always-correct affirmative answer, Q. "Does he always ride like that or is he just showing off?" A. "Yep." Trevor has surrounded himself with a group of bikers, encourages everyday people to put on boxing gloves, and confronts chaos with chaos. Abramovich faithfully reports what he sees.

There is no resolution -- the work is nonfiction -- life just goes on. However, there is closure. Abramovich's childhood bully has not changed, but Abramovich's perspective has. Confrontation is life, and it will continue.

By Fiona Levaster
What a wonderful book. From the core of the story --the grown-up victim of a bully and the grown-up bully himself come together to find that it was never so simple as all that--the book expands, chronicling what happens to an array of men who don't fit into the system very well, who reject the system just as they are rejected by it. Some have better reactions than others. Some of those reactions are brutal. some are very funny. As is this book. All of it is brilliant.

excellent resource for the novice warrior
By desertmama
Excellent book. I'm not very well versed in spiritual warfare and I felt like this book gave me a great background and place to jump in right away. It is very equipping with many example prayers that you can adapt to your own situation. He gives good explanations on why these areas should be prayed over, he covers a broad range of topics, and he gives interesting anecdotes to illustrate his point. I appreciate his clear writing style (very easy to understand and follow) as well his transparency in life (this makes it all very relatable as he seems like a "normal" person with issues we all deal with). I use the example prayers so much that I had to order this in paperback too so that I could easily flip to these. I can definitely feel the authority and power of God on me as I pray these! As someone who sees into the spiritual realm regularly, this author's insights in spiritual warfare are a must-read!

To quote the author "If you do this type of covering [prayer] every day, you will see results. These prayers have their basis in the Scriptures and as such they are legal rights that I am claiming over my family. Do this for a month and you will have a different atmosphere in your home. Provide protection to the degree that you have been given the power and the authority to do so. Your family will have an increase in the peace that passes understanding." I am so excited to try this!

Most useful book I've read on spiritual warfare
By Karen Klismet
Michael Van Vlymen does it again! Most useful book I've read on spiritual warfare. Rather than getting bogged down in pedantic theological discourse, the author gives a lot of practical "how to" tips for immediate application. A great resource. Can be utilized alone in or in a small group study setting.

Practical and user friendly
By Tracy K.
Highly recommended. Christians are falling sadly short of their calling and supernatural power. The Bible is clear, we are engaged in a battle whether you choose to fight (even believe it) or not. This book is a great tool to help you turn and face the enemy, which is the only way to defeat him...

Required reading for any healer or musician
By amazon customer
I was looking for literature to help me expand my understanding and music, in other words to broaden my horizons and open my mind about sound. I found that exactly on The Power of Sound. It is both very well researched and complete, the book has a complementary website, which is very useful because if you want to get deeper into any of the subjects or you want to read about what other people say about a topic, you can go to the website. This help the book to be less dense but still gives you the option to go deeper.

Joshua Leeds is a musician and producer, he is not a doctor, and he acknowledges this. Mr. Leeds knows his limitations and he encourages collaboration between healers, doctors, musicians and specialists of other disciplines. I also see this as a plus in the book.

I read the ebook, so unfortunately I didn't get to listen to the audio examples. I do miss them a little bit. I wish they had the kindle version with mp3s or something like that (website samples). That will be even better.

I don't have anything bad to say about this book. I feel that it is very complete, seriously written and researched, still fun to read and very inspiring. I take this book as a springboard to go deeper into specific areas of sound healing now that I have a better understanding about the current trends.

Sound, What's helpful & What's not!
By William L Clark
I concur with the commentary of the other positive reviews and...
Why I liked the book: It's very well researched and not solely the findings of the author. Lot's of cross indexing, references with directions on how to find the source of additional in-depth information for those desiring to pursue further., good glossary of the terms used throughout the book.

Many current authors such Bruce Lipton, Steve Bhaerman, Richard Gerber, Greg Braden, Ma Emoto, Freddy Silva, and others all discuss frequencies of sound, harmonics, energies, neuroscience, music, healing properties and their interrelationship.

Excellent
By Mitch
The Book is very informative about the power of sound and its uses for healing but the C.D. alone makes it well worth the price paid that is if you like Classical music.
If you are a musician or therapist or healer this will be a good Book to read and incorporate into your practice. Really excellent work and I am happy to recommend this Book/C.D.

"The idea that music has a therapeutic function is going through a rapid transformation based on research done in neuroscience "
" Based on reliable experimental design, the preliminary results of our research have shown that music seems to have a direct and specific effect on cellular behavior which is made clear by cellular survival activation as well as the reproduction and neurogenesis mechanisms" quote from Neysa Navarro in the preface of this book .

This book will take you on a journey of discovery on the way sound affects your well being.
Great and Interesting read . thanks to Joshua Leeds for a great book and wonderful Music C.D. very beautiful music !

The Carrot and the Stick
By Daniel Pipes, Middle East Forum, Philadelphia
Two months after the Arab-Israeli war of June 1967 ended, then Colonel, now Major General (ret), Gazit found himself put in charge of the West Bank territories Israeli troops had just won. His surprise at this appointment was exceeded only by the commands unpreparedness to rule well over a half-million Arabs. Even the operational order for war issued on June 4, 1967 -- which clearly defined the mission of capturing the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Stripmade no mention of the need to establish a military government. As a result, confusion reigned and improvisation took over. Gazit shows in fascinating detail how practices evolved out of a combination of the 1956 experience of ruling the Gaza Strip, the attitudes of Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, and exigencies of the moment. An example of the last: anger at the Jordanians for having placed a urinal against the Western Wall seems to have led to the clearing of a large plaza near the Wall, quite contrary to international law. Gazit shows that the principal guidelines of Israeli rule were established and consolidated during the first three months after the Six-Day War. These included such profoundly consequential decisions as the annexation of Jerusalem, the open bridges policy toward Jordan, and the permission for Israelis to settle in the captured areas.
Gazit provides an extremely informative account by drawing both on his personal experience and in-depth research on the evolution of Israeli rule. Few books offer so much original information on the shaping of the current Arab-Israeli conflict.

Suffers in the details
By H. Grove (errantdreams)
The basic setup is interesting. The plot of trying to eliminate drug labs and the ways in which that fits into the larger war appeals to me. I like the ways in which the settlers have adapted to Makaum. Unfortunately, it's in the details that Odom's book suffers.

The pacing gets derailed in odd places. One paragraph of high-octane action stops in the middle to describe how a nearby fruit tastes. Then Sage takes time out of the pounding violence to ruminate on local marriage customs. It brings the whole thing to a screeching halt for no good reason, and it jerked me right out of the story.

As in Huff's Confederation novels, the Makaum War's alien enemies are basically insects. Odom tries to get into their heads by giving them PoV sections. Unfortunately this makes the aliens seem more human and much less alien. Maybe this was deliberate, but I very much prefer Huff's ability to let the aliens feel alien. Speaking of characterization, many of the characters lack depth. The major antagonist, for example, comes across as a cartoonish villain. As for Sage himself, he's actually a bit of a male Mary Sue character. Everyone either crushes on him or hates him. He's supposedly smart and capable, but... Well, as an example, early on in the book he does something rash that's pretty much guaranteed to get him killed by one of the corp's thugs. Then he's oddly surprised when, in fact, he nearly gets killed. I'm pretty sure the author didn't mean him to come across as completely and utterly naive, but that's how he seems in that circumstance.

Some tech details didn't add up for me. There are huge powered suits that some of the characters use in battles. The powered suits in Odom's book sprawl helplessly on their backs if knocked over, unable to defend or right themselves (that seems like a pretty huge design flaw). They're similarly vulnerable on soft ground, and yet the military apparently deployed them on a jungle planet. That seems like a poor idea at best.

Early on we find out about Makaum's dangerous fauna and nigh-sentient flora. I therefore expected them to have a real role in the story, but instead they primarily acted as background detail. It's a waste of one of the few things that could make this book stand out from others of its genre.

I could go on with a bunch of smaller details, but I'm trying to avoid nit-picking every last thing. It suffices to say that the details feel careless and often don't quite add up right.

A True Soldier
By Talvi
Master Sergeant is a well-written military sci fi that reminded me greatly of Korean and Viet Nam heroic war fiction of the 1970s. The villains in this first novel are corporations (though that will change to the Phrenorians in future books), and as a result this feels very much like a prequel to a series. More of a background on main character Frank Sage and his nemesis Phrenorian warrior Zhoh before they commence a very personal war.

Story: 6 years of training has left Master Sergeant Sage with a burning desire to be back on the front lines of battle. Released finally back into the war effort, he lands on Makaum - a planet settled in history by terraforming humans but now contested by the descendants of the terraformers, the alien Phrenorians, and the Terran Military. Sage will shake things up greatly on Makaum as he works to undermine illegal drug activities by an unpleasant corporation. In the background, Phrenoan elite warrior Zhoh GhiCemid watches carefully as he recognizes a worthy adversary in the Master Sergeant.

There are several POVs in the book: Master Sergeant Sage, a local young hunter Jahup, and the head of the Phrenoian component on the planet, Zhoh. I would have preferred only Sage, however, and didn't feel there was much for Zhoh or Jahup to do except start a mutual admiration society over Sage. I'm going to have to assume that the psychology we're given in this book will bear fruit in later volumes as Zhoh and Sage will wage a war over Makaum.

The universe is well built here and Odom has clearly spent a lot of time setting up the intricacies of not only Makaum but also the Phrenorian war. There are other alien species (many, in fact) but primarily it is the 'sting tail' Phrenorians that concern the Terran military. The plot centers on the fragile cease fire around the Makaum decision on which 'off worlder' they will ally with - an important choice because clearly there is something very different about the planet. Something that the Phrenorians have sent their best warrior to secure.

Obviously, we are being set up for an epic story of two alpha males (Sage and Zhoh). And truly, this is a very macho book - manly males who have their own agenda and fight bad guys or save lives with aplomb and lots of guns/explosives. Fortunately, the women are no slouches either, though I'd expect them to be growing hair on their chest after being around all that machismo.

In all, an emphasis on military here - guys with guns taking out bad guys. The sci fi aspect is well done as well but this isn't space opera (E.g., Jack Campbell) or space politics (e.g., CJ Cherryh). Most characters did feel a bit like caricatures or martial stereotypes - hence, the 4 out of 5 star rating. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

This latest from Mel Odom is a mixed bag.

Part Avatar, part Halo, and part James Axler's Outlanders(which he wrote a few, back in the day) with a lot of fresh concepts that is all Odom.

Essentially, the story is about a master sergeant maverick who is assigned a black ops type of outfit to battle drug traffickers in the deep jungles of a world very much like Avatar. (Which is what we really wanted to see more of!) But don't really get after 1/3 of the book quickly covers that aspect.

This is a pretty good book, but we felt it was a little bogged down and rushed in various areas. Too much info dumping at times. Too many different species of aliens, both insect, animal, and semi-human, that is not needed in this book. Sure, it is a first in a series. But would have liked Odom to quickly introduce the reading audience to all that, then stay with a select few alien species.

This is not a bad book by any means. But we just felt that Mel overdone it. Too much for one book. Maybe introduce the reader, little by little, with each book, instead of trying too much too soon. For a couple of instances: The author introduced the reader to the jungle planet of Makaum. called the Green hell for a very good reason: chock full of alien insects and tons of different types of alien species, ie giant spiders and lizards, just to name a couple. But after the main character meets a couple of these, the rest of the story is devoid of any more, besides a couple of breeds of insects. Another is the introduction of a select few soldiers that the main character must assemble to work black with. But only one is properly introduced. The rest are just names on a page. We could care less about them.

There is a lot to also like about this debut sci-fi book series: Loads of action. Some very interesting characters, both human and alien. A colorful and large scale universe in which to play in. Some very cool sci-fi soldier tech.

We liked it, but feel that there is much room for improvement in the next book.

The Last Chinese Chef: A Novel, by Nicole Mones

This alluring novel of friendship, love, and cuisine brings the best-selling author of Lost in Translation and A Cup of Light to one of the great Chinese subjects: food. As in her previous novels, Mones’s captivating story also brings into focus a changing China -- this time the hidden world of high culinary culture.

When Maggie McElroy, a widowed American food writer, learns of a Chinese paternity claim against her late husband’s estate, she has to go immediately to Beijing. She asks her magazine for time off, but her editor counters with an assignment: to profile the rising culinary star Sam Liang.

In China Maggie unties the knots of her husband’s past, finding out more than she expected about him and about herself. With Sam as her guide, she is also drawn deep into a world of food rooted in centuries of history and philosophy. To her surprise she begins to be transformed by the cuisine, by Sam’s family -- a querulous but loving pack of cooks and diners -- and most of all by Sam himself. The Last Chinese Chef is the exhilarating story of a woman regaining her soul in the most unexpected of places.

Amazon.com Review
Nicole Mones has mined the endless riches of China once again in The Last Chinese Chef. This time she hits the trifecta: the personal stories of Sam and Maggie, the history and lore of Chinese cuisine, and an inside look at cultural dislocation. Maggie McElroy is a widowed American food writer who is suddenly confronted with a paternity claim against her late husband's estate--by a Chinese family. Her editor offers her another reason to go to Beijing: write an article about a rising young Chinese-American-Jewish chef, Sam Liang. Having sold the home she had with her late husband Matt and reduced her possessions to only the barest necessities, with her life feeling as though it is contracting around her, Maggie embraces the oppportunity to sort out her feelings about Matt's supposed infidelity and do some work at the same time.

She and Sam hit it off right away, even though he is involved in a very important competition for a place on the Chinese national cooking team for the 2008 Olympics. They travel together to the south of China where she meets her husband's possible daughter--with Sam standing by to act as translator--and where Maggie meets much of Sam's family. He has been welcomed back with open arms, even though he occasionally feels that he has one foot in China and one in Ohio. The Beijing uncles and the Hangzhou uncle are a raucous, loving, argumentative bunch of foodies who advise Sam about menus, encourage a romance with Maggie, make him start over again when the dish isn't perfect, and alternately praise and criticize his cooking.

Maggie loves being in the middle of it all and finds herself more and more drawn to Sam. She begins, with Sam's help, to see food as "healing" and understands the guanxi or "connectedness" that takes place around food. At the beginning of each chapter is a paragraph taken from a book entitled The Last Chinese Chef, written by Sam's grandfather and translated by Sam and his father. Mones has written that book, too, which is an explanation of the place of food in Chinese history and family life. The novel is rich with meaning and lore and an examination of loving relationships. Don't even touch this book when you're hungry. The descriptions make the aromas and textures float right off the page. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
A recently widowed American food writer finds solace and love—and the most inspiring food she's ever encountered—during a visit to China in Mones's sumptuous latest. Still reeling from husband Matt's accidental death a year ago, food writer Maggie McElroy is flummoxed when a paternity claim is filed against Matt's estate from Beijing, where he sometimes traveled for business. Before Maggie embarks on the obligatory trip to investigate, her editor assigns her a profile on Sam Liang, a half-Chinese American chef living in Beijing who is about to enter a prestigious cooking competition. Sam's old-school recipes and history lessons of high Chinese cuisine kick-start Maggie's dulled passion for food and help her let go of her grief, even as she learns of Matt's Beijing bed hopping. Though the narrative can get bogged down in the minutiae of Chinese culinary history (filtered through the experiences of Sam's family), Mones's descriptions of fine cuisine are tantalizing, and her protagonist's quest is bracing and unburdened by melodrama. Early in her visit, Maggie scoffs at the idea that "food can heal the human heart." Mones smartly proves her wrong. (May)

Great for lovers of Chinese cuisine.
By MaggieG
My favorite feature of this book is its incorporation of Chinese history in the story line. I was delighted to learn so much about China and Chinese cuisine--a topic of total ignorance for me. The feature that most spoiled my enjoyment of the book was the incorporation of Chinese history in the story line. Where this was done well--in short passages integrated and supportive of either character development or plot--the reading experience was enhanced with surprises that did not detract from the story. Where this facet became an information dump, I was pulled away from the story and, in some instances, bored. The author obviously loves the subject more than she cares about the reading experience.
The situation set up by the story premise could have been devleoped into a more complex story with a bit more investment in focus on the characters rather than the food. Everyone was too virtuous for this to be an interesting story. The only really flawed, interesting character was dead.

Highly recommend
By Sjpeeples
It's a wonderful experience to discover a new author, and Nicole Mones is a welcome addition to my list of favorites. I was thoroughly engaged by the characters and their conflicts, and as a foodie I loved the descriptions of traditional Chinese dishes and the stories behind them. Ms. Mones' way of describing feelings, textures and tastes captivated me. On occasion, I re-read passages just for the pleasure of her evocative prose. Definitely a 5 star read for me.

By Joel C. Jacobson
